Gay USA (1977)
1h 18m | Documentary

"The documentary focuses on the gay rights movement. Composed of footage shot at a number of gay pride events around the United States in 1977,[2] the film captures a time just as the gay rights movement began facing the first organized backlash in the form of Anita Bryant and her campaign to repeal anti-discrimination protection in Dade County. ...

Have this queued up on my DVR. I've never seen it. As a gay man who was a young teenager at that time (13/14), this was a very confusing era for me. There were snippets of visibly gay characters in movies and TV, especially important for those of us who grew up in small town middle America, but the rising culture disputes (I especially remember campaigns against gay teachers) with Anita Bryant and the birth of the Moral Majority movement was scary for me, anyway. And then the coming AIDS crisis a few years later... It all did a number on me, personally, and I appreciate what the folks who were a bit older than I was had to go through and what they accomplished.

I thought it was ok. I thought it could've been shorter (too many interviews asking dumb questions). But it was a nice snapshot of its time. (the 70s). I thought the Queen (shown later) was more interesting. I found the ending rather sad

Sorry for the correction, but The Hours (2002), scheduled for June 27, is not a TCM premiere. It was previously shown on TCM on Feb. 21, 2020 as part of 31 Days of Oscar. So Thursday will be the 2nd time it has been shown on TCM. (By the way, TCM has just added it to their web schedule, so the 9:30 pm ET start time on the 27th is confirmed.) Nevertheless, thank you ziggy for posting the summary.

I also very much like the performance of the little boy in The Hours, and I often do not like performances by children.

The Nicole Kidman AFI Tribute Special has already aired on TNT before tonight's TCM airing and it is on demand, so I am checking to see who was there in person and those who just appeared on video to pay their respects.

In person:
Morgan Freeman
Zoe Saldana
Naomi Watts
Keith Urban (current husband)
Mike Myers (who arrived in an Eyes Wide Shut mask and cloak, and upon removing them stating "You were expecting somebody else?")
Joey King
Zac Efron
Reese Witherspoon
Aaron Sorkin
Miles Teller
Meryl Streep

On video:
Baz Luhrman
Phillip Noyce (director)
Russell Crowe (who I would not have recognized without his name in the corner)
Jane Campion
Jimmy Fallon
Hugh Jackman
Cate Blanchett

Some recognizable faces in the audience though....

As for the premieres, they chose some good ones to represent Nicole.

The only thing I can think of though when it comes to the one non-Nicole premiere, The Hotel New Hampshire is how my father told me how much he despised that film and how he walked out on it when it got to the incest scene that the film seemingly condoned. (Of course though, looking at that film's plot, it seemingly was covering seemingly every taboo imaginable, also including terrorism, suicide, and gang rape)

"Enemy Mine" (1985)
1h 52m | Adventure/Sci-fi

a human and alien soldier, respectively, who become stranded together on an inhospitable planet and must overcome their mutual distrust in order to cooperate and survive. ...

Director
Wolfgang Petersen
Cast
Dennis Quaid, Louis Gossett

".... Critics consensus on Rotten Tomatoes reads: "Enemy Mine extracts thrilling sci-fi pulp from Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr.'s chemistry and inventive production design, but an overextended story diminishes the power of its central duo's relationship."....
Variety magazine called it "an anthropomorphic view of life but touching nonetheless".[19]
On Metacritic, it has a score of 59%, based on reviews from nine critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".....

Seventeen years later, another New York Times reviewer gave the film a more positive assessment, noting that, "taken in the intended spirit, it's often moving, suggesting what might happen if two of Earth's perpetually warring peoples were stranded together."[20]
The Los Angeles Times praised the film, calling it "surprisingly coherent, surprisingly enjoyable"...

I don't know the film, but I have to chuckle at the line "surprisingly coherent." Maybe that's a comment on the director's other films? Or the films the reviewer had been seeing in that time frame?

Enemy Mine is a fun film. It's not particularly good, but it's one of those movies that has its heart in the right place. Two other 80s movies I would give that description to are Krush Groove and Gleaming the Cube.

Blanche Fury (1948)
1h 30m | Crime

Penniless governess Blanche Fullerton takes a job at the estate of her rich relations, the Fury family. To better her position in life, Blanche marries her dull cousin, Laurence Fury, with whom she has a daughter. But before long, boredom sets in, and Blanche begins a tempestuous romance with stableman Philip Thorn. Together, they hatch a murderous plan to gain control of the estate.

Director
Marc Allegret
Cast
Valerie Hobson, Stewart Granger, Michael Gough

"....Blanche Fury is a potboiler. Take a dollop of Jane Eyre, a soupcon of The Moonstone, a dash of Gone with the Wind, consult with Bill Shakespeare about how many bodies you can get away with piling up at the end, photograph beautifully, ...
...The best thing about Blanche Fury is its look. Marc Allegret, at the beginning of his very brief British period, moves matters along so smoothly that you may not realize how ridiculous it all is—despite being inspired by real events—until it’s all over. The real star is cinematographer Guy Green’s use of Technicolor, coming right after his spectacular Oscar-winning b&w work on Great Expectations. Green and the uncredited Geoffrey Unsworth give the film some lush blues and greens, as with the colorful gypsy caravans, but the dominant color is red, suitably for an overheated melodrama, with the varying shades of Blanche’s hair matching what’s going on in the plot at the moment. The cinematography makes the film’s mostly predictable nonsense easier to take...."
