AGAIN......NOT SHOWN ON TCM SCHEDULE  :tickedoff:
But is on my DTV schedule

late THURS. early FRI., 7-12
SOTM: Eva Marie Saint

@12:15 am (CT)

"That Certain Feeling" (1956)

A meek unknown (Bob Hope) draws a popular comic strip for a pompous cartoonist (George Sanders) engaged to his ex-wife (Eva Marie Saint).

"... American comedy film directed by Norman Panama and Melvin Frank, and starring Bob Hope, Eva Marie Saint and George Sanders.[1] The cast also features Pearl Bailey and a young Jerry Mathers.

Based on the Broadway play King of Hearts by Jean Kerr,[2] the film includes a song of the same name with music by George Gershwin and lyrics by Ira Gershwin, ...

"That Certain Feeling" was a successful transfer of the Broadway play into a satisfying movie directed by the team of Melvin Frank, and Norman Panama, who had been connected to the film industry and knew what they were doing. This is a picture that was typical of the features presented at New York's Radio City Music Hall, when it showed films and stage shows. It has that glorious look of the times when it was produced.

Bob Hope clearly demonstrates he had the range to play Dignan, and in many ways, he surprises in his approach to his character. Eva Marie Saint, fresh out of "On the Waterfront", shows as a glamorous side of herself as the love interest of the leading man. George Sanders excels as the egotistical Larry Larkin. Jerry Mathers, who would go to "Leave it to Beaver" television series, is also a great addition. Best of all is the irresistible Pearl Bailey who plays Gussie, the maid that brings the former lovers together....."

The start time for That Certain Feeling on TCM is actually 3:15 am Eastern, or 2:15 am Central time early on Friday. They showed a clip from the film during Eva Marie Saint's interview with Robert Osborne, so all these years later we finally get a chance to see it.

That Certain Feeling was a big letdown early this morning - the video that TCM showed was 'fullscreen' instead of widescreen and the color was washed out. VistaVision it is not. (The Eva Marie Saint interview from the Classic Film Festival included a clip that was in widescreen.) I'm not sure if Paramount provided the video but their logo is at the beginning, so I hope somewhere they have a good copy they can restore and eventually make available.

one of Ben M's favorites....

early Sun., 7-14

1:30
am (ET)

"Midnight Run" (1988)
2h 8m | Action | TV-14

Eddie Moscone (Joe Pantoliano) hires tight-lipped bounty hunter Jack Walsh (Robert De Niro) to locate a mob accountant named "The Duke" (Charles Grodin) and bring him to L.A.,....

Director
Martin Brest
Cast
Robert De Niro, Charles Grodin, Yaphet Kotto

"...Film critic Roger Ebert gave the film 3.5 out of 4 stars and wrote, "What Midnight Run does with these two characters is astonishing, because it's accomplished within the structure of a comic thriller ... It's rare for a thriller to end with a scene of genuinely moving intimacy, but this one does, and it earns it."[16]
In his review for The Globe and Mail, Jay Scott praised the performances: "De Niro has the time of his acting life lightening up and sending up all those raging bulls that won him all those Oscars ... Charles Grodin, master of the double-take and maestro of the slow burn, the best light character comic since Jack Benny stopped playing himself"....
On Rotten Tomatoes the film holds an approval rating of 95% based on 56 reviews, with an average rating of 8.00/10.
The site's critics consensus reads, "Enlivened by the antagonistic chemistry between Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin, Midnight Run is an uncommonly entertaining odd couple comedy."...

I stumbled across That Certain Feeling on the Internet Archive when looking to see what is available:

The video TCM showed is a bit better than this but is similar in aspect ratio and color.
I believe the archive is from a PAL source so the voices are pitched up some from TCM's presentation.

I saw a copy on YouTube as well. Probably the same copy, as it looks similar with the washed out colors and what sounded like higher pitched audio

Traces the origins and actions of World War I, from the funeral of Britain's King Edward VII to the Versailles Treaty.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0132998/re ... _=tt_ov_rt
"The opening prologue in the film sets the stage. "The year 1914. Millions of peaceful and industrious people were hounded into a war by the folly of a few all-powerful leaders. The war was in no way inevitable. But the results determined the shape of the world in which we live today (1964)." And, "The innocence of the people was in the streets of Europe. The guilt was in the Cabinets."....

I thought it left out a lot. Almost no mention of what was happening on the Eastern front after the East Prussia Russian defeat. Just concentrated on the Eastern Front. Was good about the pre-war build up. I read the book years ago. I think it had the same slant.

WED., 7-31

11: 30 pm (CT)

Tony Rome (1967)

American neo-noir mystery crime thriller film directed by Gordon Douglas and starring Frank Sinatra in the title role, alongside Jill St. John, Sue Lyon and Gena Rowlands. It was adapted from Marvin H. Albert's novel Miami Mayhem.

The story follows the adventures of Miami private investigator Tony Rome (Sinatra) in his quest to locate a missing diamond pin that belongs to a wealthy heiress. ...

"Tony Rome was met with mixed reviews upon release. Many film critics felt that Sinatra was paying homage to his late friend Humphrey Bogart, since he was part of the original "Rat Pack" and had dated (and nearly married) Bogart's widow, Lauren Bacall. However, Sinatra created his own version of the private detective, making him a more jaunty and less dour incarnation than Bogart's famous characterizations....

Never much cared for Sinatra as a singer and much less as an actor.
The car is a 1958 De Soto Fireflite Sportsman hardtop.

Set your VCR (ir you still have one!) for 12:30 a.m. on Saturday Aug 24th for Robert Shaw and Mary Are in The Luck of Ginger Coffey. IMO a very good early Canadian feature shot in Montreal and one of Shaw's very best.
