FRI., 8-9
SUTS: Montgomery Clift....

10:30 am (CT)
Freud ('62)
aka: "Freud: The Secret Passion"

"John Huston's biopic of Sigmund Freud (Montgomery Clift) follows the progress of the father of psychoanalytical psychiatry as he develops the notion that neurosis stems from sexual repression. By treating patients with various issues, including a woman haunted by recurring dreams (Susannah York) and a man with an Oedipus complex (David McCallum), Freud experiences epiphanies that lead to the birth of modern analysis, despite the scorn his theories initially receive from his colleagues....
Other cast members include Larry Parks, Susan Kohner, Eileen Herlie, Eric Portman,...
The screenplay was by Charles Kaufman and Reinhardt, with some elements from a script by Jean-Paul Sartre, who withdrew his name from the film....

".... Times film critic Bosley Crowther selected the film as one of the ten best of 1962, describing it as "stark, intense and penetrating" and Clift's performance as "eerily illuminating."[8] Other reviews were mixed, with Time magazine praising the film, but Newsweek dismissing it. Critic John Simon described it as "respectful and, Lord knows, serious," while the journal Films and Filming called it a "period piece,"[1] Film scholar Ernest Callenbach described it as "a feature-length classroom film."[9]
Nonetheless, the film received two Academy Award nominations (for Best Original Screenplay and Best Music) and four Golden Globe nominations (for Best Motion Picture, Actress, Supporting Actress, and Director). Huston was nominated for the Golden Bear award at the 1963 Berlin Film Festival and by the Directors Guild of America. The Writers Guild of America also nominated Charles Kaufman and Wolfgang Reinhardt for their screenplay.....

"Ironweed" 1987

American drama film directed by Héctor Babenco. Adapted to the screen by William Kennedy from his similarly named Pulitzer Prize–winning novel, Ironweed stars Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep, with Carroll Baker, Michael O'Keefe, Diane Venora, Fred Gwynne, Nathan Lane, and Tom Waits in supporting roles.
The story concerns the relationship of a homeless couple—Francis, an alcoholic, and Helen, a terminally ill woman—during the years following the Great Depression. Major portions of the film were shot on location in Albany, New York.
The film received mixed reviews and was a box-office bomb, but Nicholson and Streep received Oscar nominations for Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively, for their performances....

...critics consensus reads, "Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep play masterfully off each, but Ironweed's unrelenting bleakness proves to be more monotonous than compelling."[2] At the time of its release, it garnered enthusiasm because of the presence of stars Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep.

Roger Ebert wrote, "Nicholson and Streep play drunks in Ironweed, and actors are said to like to play drunks, because it gives them an excuse for overacting. But there is not much visible 'acting' in this movie; the actors are too good for that." Ebert gave the film three stars out of four....

I still feel a bit of a twinge about Florence Foster Jenkins. Not because its a bad film, it is a good one, but because it just makes me feel old that a film from only 8 years ago that I saw in the theatre is already playing on the channel.

Director: Georges Lautner

"This is an intriguing film that contains noisy action , suspense , thrills , car chases and anything else . Belmondo steals the show , as always , as he runs and leaps ; he jumps over buildings , driving quickly cars and executes his own stunts . Belmondo sports an inimitable smile while shots and kills ; as usual he combines action with comic episodes . The highlights result to be a dueling filmed in Western-showdown style between Belmondo and Robert Hossein ; furthermore , a suspenseful and surpring ending . Enjoyable acting by main star names , Jean Paul Belmondo and Robert Hossein . ....."

The music was composed by Ennio Morricone, and the main theme "Chi Mai" became an instrumental hit and subsequent classic.

I actually really liked this movie.

The 1941 MISS ALBANY DINER was cleaned & tarted up for the shoot, remaining retro for decades afterwards. There were candid snapshots of the film crew/actors displayed inside near the menuboard!

The owner’s son is a trained chef and designed an eclectic menu which was wildly popular-a long line waiting for a booth on weekends.
Sadly, the owners passed away, the Son was not interested in going on and the Diner remains vacant to my knowledge.

JPB was very entertaining in The Professional as was the movie itself.
Doing a bit of an avant la lettre Rambo in the early scenes set in that
fictitious African country. And then returning to France to take revenge
on the security folks who betrayed him. A well paced action flick with
the turned up fighting noises. Wam! Bam! Sadly, spoiler alert, JPB doesn't
make it out alive. What makes the movie even more interesting is that froggy
is still trying to hold on in Francophone Africa and not doing that well.

I saw the first part of The Professional until it got too sadistic for me (the torture of the women). I must say it was very well directed and edited. The story of France and its former African colonies probably didn't mean much to most Americans in 1981, but it certainly resonated in France.

TUES., 8-20
SUTS: Jeanne Crain...

1:00pm (CT)
The Tattered Dress (1957)
After top lawyer James Blane gets an acquittal for Michael Reston who killed another man for sexually roughing up his trophy wife, the murderous town sheriff frames him for bribing a juror in the case.

Director
Jack Arnold

Writer
George Zuckerman

Stars:
Jeff Chandler, Jeanne Crain, Jack Carson, , Gail Russell and Elaine Stewart.

"...The titular, 'Tattered Dress' serves as a fitting metaphor for the miscarriage and abuse of justice, stripped to its core, to reveal the naked underbelly of multiple themes ranging from murder, revenge, conspiracy, perjury, mob passion, provincialism and prejudice. There is a tender love story as well that plays out against the intrigue that unfolds. All this is packed into this picture which is enhanced by an exciting twist that sees the protagonist cast from successful defence lawyer to accused within a short period of time. At the end of the day, it's a well-crafted script that taps into the unmistakable talents of a very capable cast of stars and a proficient director and production team...."

"The Los Angeles Times wrote that Chandler "does the best acting job of his career" in the picture.
Biographer Dana M. Reemes in Directed by Jack Arnold (1988) writes that the production provided “opportunities for considerable directorial creativity…The best example of this is without doubt the film’s prologue, which is very cinematic and utterly without dialogue.”...

The Tattered Dress (1957) is a solid late cycle noir film. I like seeing Gail Russell but one can see the change booze had on her.

"The Luck of Ginger Coffey"
is a 1964 Canadian film directed by Irvin Kershner. It is based on the Governor General's Award-winning novel by Northern Irish-Canadian writer Brian Moore

James "Ginger" Coffey (Robert Shaw), an unemployed Irishman whose nickname stems from his red hair and mustache, moves his family to Montreal in hopes of finding work. He has trouble getting a job, until a friend helps him land a lowly position at a newspaper. Because of his poor prospects, his wife (Mary Ure) leaves him, taking their daughter with her. Ginger works at becoming a reporter to win back his wife and impress his daughter, but booze and brawling distract him from his goal....

"Robert Shaw shines as the title character in this tale of Irish immigrants hoping to create a new life for themselves in Montreal, Canada. While “Ginger” is undeniably self-deluded, unrealistic, and dishonest, the strength of Shaw’s performance lies in the fact that we literally can’t help sympathizing with Ginger from the moment he appears on-screen: his face is full of such genuine good cheer (his eyes are piercingly bright) that one immediately understands why he gets so far on charisma and charm alone. Unfortunately, despite the deceptively cheery soundtrack, circumstances quickly go downhill, as Ginger makes one bad decision after another, and his wife (played with nuance and depth by Shaw’s real-life wife, Mary Ure) suddenly realizes she can no longer count on Ginger as a reliable partner. Given its depressing trajectory, The Luck of Ginger Coffey won’t be for all tastes — but it’s certainly worth a look...."
