[THE ORIGINAL MUNSTERS TV SERIES IS] From the same team that brought you Leave it to Beaver
, Bob Mosher & Joe Connelly. They also share an Oscar nomination for The Private War of Major Benson
Thank you, I did not know that! (my knowledge of classic television is not great.)
it seems like the writers of THE MUNSTERS
took a special relish in SUBVERTING SUUUUUUPER TYPICAL SUBURBAN IMAGES and TROPES of popular sitcoms (they also reference other shows of the era, which i presume were on the same network, GRANDPA actually had MY THREE SONS playing in an episode i watched the other day)- and THE LEAVE IT TO BEAVER house shows up in multiple episodes.
it's a shame it only ran for two seasons- but at the same time, they would have likely run out of ideas at some point unless they were smoking some good s***, which they might well have been.
side note- really and truly though, even if it wasn't funny (which it is) or well acted (which it DEFINITELY is), it would still be worth watching THE MUNSTERS for THE SPECIAL EFFECTS, which are ****ing WILD.
i was watching an episode the other day and BUTCH PATRICK- not a double, it was DEFINITELY him- was SITTING IN THE FIREPLACE with LIT LOGS all around him, holy **** I can't BELIEVE they did that (I bet some kids tried it at home.)
That PURPLE VELVET SUIT
and THOSE PROSTHETICS just HAD to be flammable, I seriously DUNNO HOW THEY PULLED IT OFF!!!
was broadcast on CBS and filmed at Universal Studios.
Both My Three Sons
and Leave it to Beaver
were broadcast on CBS and ABC.
CBS carried LITB
for the first season, and ABC had it for the rest of the run.
ABC carried MTS
through the B&W years (first 5 seasons) and CBS thereafter (in color), starting in September 1965.
Also, both shows were filmed at different studios through their runs.
was filmed at Desilu until Lucille Ball sold Desilu Studios to Paramount/Gulf+Western in late 1967. MTS
moved production to CBS Studio Center (formerly Republic Studios) after that.
The first two seasons of LITB
were filmed at the old Republic Studios (later CBS Studio Center). They moved production to Universal starting with the 3rd season. This is why the Cleavers move at the start of the 3rd season. The business reason is that LITB
was produced, in part, by MCA, before MCA bought Universal. MCA production was at Republic Studios. Once MCA bought Universal, they moved their shows to the larger Universal lot.
So the LITB
house shows up because they used the same backlot at Universal.
reference was probably in the second season of The Munsters
, when both shows were on CBS. The networks didn't like promoting another network's show. On the Tonight Show,
whenever a guest was promoting an ABC or CBS show, it was typically referred to as running on "another network."
The old CBS Studio Center (Republic Studios) is now just known as the Radford Studio Center. CBS sold the property to a real estate investment company, as they did with CBS Television City. Studio Center was home to a variety of shows like Gunsmoke
, Gilligan's Island
, and nearly all (if not all) the MTM shows in the 70s and 80s.
