I Just Watched...
Re: I Just Watched...
You know, I feel really guilty and I owe you guys a very big apology for popping off at the mouth yesterday.
As per your recommendations, I checked out THE HOUSE OF FEAR (1945)- a UNIVERSAL SHERLOCK HOLMES pic- and really, it was a pretty terrific movie. Head and shoulders above TERROR BY NIGHT in all facets- including some really fantastic and weird sets and a lot of fun camera angles and movements.
Nigel Bruce wasn’t quite as annoying as usual in this film, and there were a few laugh out loud moments.
WARNING: SPOILERISH STATEMENT TO FOLLOW:
There is a delicious twist at the end (a bit of a play on AND THEN THERE WERE NONE) that I absolutely did *not see* coming- it is wonderful and kind of hilarious.
AUBREY MATHER has an absolutely fantastic supporting role in this.

One of my favorites. I love the dour Mrs. Monteith, the housekeeper played by Sally Shepherd, who brings the envelopes with the pips.Lorna wrote: ↑August 30th, 2024, 5:03 am You know, I feel really guilty and I owe you guys a very big apology for popping off at the mouth yesterday.

I realized after I posted that i forgot to give a shout-out to SCOTTISH FRAU BLUCHER, who in character as the housekeeper ABSOLUTELY RELISHES her role as THE ANGEL OF DEATH (as any true Scot would), really playing it up every time she delivers the envelope.
(there is a touch of the B**** SISTER from THE OLD DARK HOUSE in her performance)
besides her, there was only one other female role in the entire film (as I recall) and it was brief (the innkeeper's daughter.)

I didn't care much for Lisa either. Another phony. But she did have a certain style/glamour that Shawn can never achieve. Wonder what Lisa is up to now?. Never hear about her. David is very popular, but I'm just not into cooking. Sometimes I'll buy food around holiday time.Bronxgirl48 wrote: ↑August 29th, 2024, 6:18 pmHibi wrote: ↑August 28th, 2024, 8:46 amThankfully, I'm unfamiliar with many of the newer hosts as I only check in from time to time while channel surfing. Jane and Mary Beth should have been put out to pasture years ago.
They've got a newbie who is becoming just as unbearable -- Nancy Yoon. Talks incessantly about herself in the third person ("Fancy Nancy loves this blouse!") and never truly connects with the audience (calling her viewers "them") Nancy is super bossy -- Nancy's favorite phrase to the camera people: "Can we come in tight?" Always telling them their job. Talk about a phony, Nancy's right up there. (along with Mary DeAngelis)
Then there is the infamous Shawn Killinger, who loves imparting knowledge about her husband's "Italian-American hair follicles" She's also been around a long while and must know where the bodies are buried.
I can't stand Shawn. She seems to have inherited Lisa Robertson's slot/berth. Another head for the remote host! UGH. How many glasses does she own???
Jane (and David) are unfortunately not going anywhere.
Shawn once told us she has always wanted to wear glasses, even as a small child. Weird. Lisa Robertson could never stop looking at herself in the monitor. Treacy does the same thing, bless her heart, lol. Mary Beth says the strangest things: "I really didn't know what a bagel was for the longest time because I was born and raised in Minnesota"

Re: I Just Watched...
I thought Sherlock Holmes And The Secret Weapon (1942) was one of the better WWII era Holmes films.
This was due to Rathbone's matching wits with a particularly sadistic Moriarty (Lionel Atwill). One scene has Moriarty draining Holmes' blood from him and saying "The needle to the end, eh Holmes?"
Rathbone and Atwill were great adversaries as they often seemed to try to "top" each other, as we saw them as Dr. Frankenstein and one armed Inspector Krough in Son Of Frankenstein (1939).

Re: I Just Watched...
honestly, from watching it over and over, it's clear that the guy who fell was at fault- he very obviously misses a step.
...but I'm sure having someone point that out immediately after and on-air would've made him feel EVEN BETTER as he lay on his fractured tail bone.

Lisa did have charisma and a certain "television" glamour. (she was selling stuff on her own shopping website several years ago but I just wasn't interested enough to check it out) Shawn openly brags about not liking water and only showering when she absolutely has to. Everyone speculated on the (now defunct) QVC board how her husband could bear to be near her, lol. David's schtick is getting old and he is also a tight-ass. I sometimes watch Gourmet Holiday and once purchased some toffee which of course they extolled as "the best ever!" but I found it mediocre and have never ordered anything again.

Dressed to Kill (1946) is another Basil Rathbone/Sherlock Holmes film that I like very much. It's the one with the music boxes (ingenious plot line) and features one of the most endearing supporting characters in all the films: Julian "Stinky" Emery, played by Edmund Breon, who sadly gets bumped off early in the picture.
Patricia Morison played the villain, just two years before she landed the role as Lillie Vanessa/Katherine in the original Broadway production of Kiss Me Kate. Harry Cording, as usual, plays a heavy. There is also a great music hall number, "You Never Know Just Who You're Going to Meet."

Re: I Just Watched...
I have been under the weather this weekend and have been alternating between watching WWII docs and UNIVERSAL SHERLOCK HOLMES FILMS.
MAN, WAS I EVER WRONG IN MY REVIEW OF TERROR BY NIGHT, and for that I APOLOGIZE.
In all honesty, TERROR BY NIGHT has been (with the exception of THE WOMAN IN GREEN) the WORST of the series, with almost ALL THE OTHER INSTALLMENTS being of vastly superior quality.
I also have to say from watching the series, THAT I HAVE A STRONG SUSPICION IT WAS IMMENSELY INFLUENTIAL ON FUTURE FILM AND TV SERIES and THE DETECTIVE/SPY genre in particular.
I have bad memories of the novelette THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES because I had an absolutely AWFUL high school English Teacher who, for some reason, thought we should all take turns reading THE ENTIRE STORY out loud in class. (if you ever want to desecrate a written work, have it read out loud by a group of freshmen high schoolers.) However, the movie really grew on me as I watched it, and although I'm still bothered by the fact that this is A SHERLOCK HOLMES STORY where SHERLOCK HOLMES HIMSELF is absent for a HUGE CHUNK of the middle- the sets ARE MARVELOUS and the actors (with the exception of WENDY BARRIE) all do a very good job. I must say I was taken aback by HOW MUCH YOUNGER NIGEL BRUCE looks in this film, not sure if they aged him for later films or not, but in real life, he was actually 3 years younger than BASIL RATHBONE. NOTE: THIS FILM MADE IN 1939 ENDS WITH A LAST LINE THAT IS A DIRECT REFERENCE TO COCAINE.
AND THEN I watched SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE VOICE OF DEATH, which is quite a bold and ingenious film- moving the series without explanation to 1939 ENGLAND and enlisting HOLMES AND WATSON into THE WAR EFFORT. This is handled effortlessly- and there is one very funny moment where HOLMES reaches to put on his DEERSTALKER CAP, only to be scolded by WATSON "HOLMES, YOU PROMISED!" before switching to the standard fedora. REGINALD DENNY (in HOT BRITISH DADDY MODE) and HENRY DANIELL have supporting parts, LIONEL ATWILL (who looks TERRIBLE!) has a very brief role as MORIARTY, i almost wonder if his part was truncated because at the time of the making of the film (1942) ATWILL was involved in a very public scandal involving allegations of sexual impropriety) this is a very moving and ambitious film, and I have very little doubt that it was, in its own way, a huge help to the WAR EFFORT. This was the only film in the series not directed by ROY WILLIAM NEIL, and I really like all the dynamic camera set-ups and INTENSE CLOSE-UPS (EVELYN ANKERS has one of her best roles in this movie and she gets a series OF STUNNING CLOSE-UPS to show what a really beautiful woman she was.) [it is funny though that her BRITISH ACCENT sounds put-on, since she was in fact a native BRIT)
MUCH OF THE SAME can also be said for SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE SECRET WEAPON, which I also liked quite a bit.
much like THE SCARLET CLAW, which is set in CANADA, and ends with a very positive note in re: THE CANADIAN PEOPLE. it's pretty clearly propaganda to get AMERICANS to realize what a huge effort CANADA was putting into the war, but as CANADA has (IMO) never gotten the credit they really deserve for their efforts in WWII (i think they were the only country to have TWO flanks on D-DAY) I'm fine with it. There is a genuinely CREEPY SCENE where the killer (a master of disquise) stabs a man to death IN DRAG.
DRESSED TO KILL takes a similar premise as THE SCARLET CLAW- a killer who is a master of disguise- but turns it rather on its head by making the killer A WOMAN
THE PEARL OF DEATH was also a lot of fun, with another good role for EVELYN ANKERS (who deserved more good roles) as she gets play similar part to the antagonist of DRESSED TO KILL.

Addendum; and much like MURDER SHE WROTE, the HOLMES SERIES also seems to have drawn from a stable of actors for multiple appearances and roles throughout the series, LIONEL ATWILL, HOLMES HERBERT, HENRY DANIELL, and MILES MANDER among them.
Also, the guy who wrote the score for THE WOLF MAN must’ve lived like A KING as much as Universal recycled it

CHICAGO (2002)
Fosse, Fosse, Fosse!
You'll be Fosse-d out way before the finale. I know I was, lol.
Richard Gere as Billy Flynn....I don't think so.
SWING TIME
BM warned us about the Bill Bojangles Robinson tribute, mentioning Astaire would be in blackface, explaining "This was common at that time, but we have a lot of first-time viewers so want to put it in context"
