I wouldn't say that. Some of the musicals never show up on TCM (like Damn Yankees). Others have little critical weight behind them (they don't appear on best movies lists, get oscar nominations, are made by major directors.)

So far, the Globes are an underwhelming lot. The inspired nominations are few and far between, even with twice as many opportunities. There's James Mason's nomination for Lolita, when there were a preposterous 16 best actor nominations. There's Some Like it Hot's wins for best comedy and best comedic actor. There's the best musical/comedy actor win for Singin' in the Rain--but they gave it to Donald O'Connor. And they nominated Flight of the Phoenix for best drama.

You have a problem with Flight of the Phoenix for best drama? Seems right to me. Or Some Like It Hot for best comedy? Often appears as #1 all time comedy on many lists. You favor Kelly over O'Connor in Singing in the Rain I'd guess? Guess our taste in movies is quite different. ๐Ÿ˜„

I was just surprised with the number of unseen films on the GG list that I rate as good compared to your other lists. Was just mildly curious if there was a common denominator of why. No biggie.

I thought it was clear that those were the exceptions to the general mediocrity of the Globes' choices.

Gotcha. Guess I didn't read it that way, but see how you meant it now.

I've totally ignored the award stuff for so long that it's kind of interesting to see your comparisons now.

Now let's look at the Golden Globes from 1971 to 2000:

GG choices clearly better than the Academy: Born on the fourth of July (89), Sense and Sensibility (95), Saving Private Ryan (98),

GG choices clearly worse than the Academy: The Exorcist/American Graffiti (73), The Goodbye Girl (77), Bugsy (91), Scent of a Woman (92),

Total disagreement, then. I've always regarded The Sting as one of the worst best picture winners.

Looking at part two of the Golden Globes, are there any good choices, aside from the better winners I already suggested? Well, there's the nomination for Days of Heaven for 1978. Both Manhattan and Being There were nominated in 1979 (oddly enough the former was nominated for Best Drama). The Cotton Club got a best drama nomination for 1984, and so did Reversal of Fortune in 1990. At least the comedy/musical section remembered Airplane!, Pennies from Heaven, A Fish Called Wanda and Toy Story 2 They also nominated Peter Sellers (three times) as Jacques Cousteau and gave him a globe for Being There. Still it means less when you have ten nominations instead of five. Though to be fair, they did nominate "New York, New York" for best song, something the Academy managed to miss.

Any other good choices from the Globes in this period, keeping in mind that they have 10 nominations instead of 5? Well Mulholland Drive got nominated for best Drama in 2001. So did A History of Violence in 2005. Finding Nemo got nominated for best comedy in 2003 and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind got nominated in 2004. Gene Hackman won for The Royal Tenenbaums in 2001, and Adam Sandler was nominated for Punch Drunk Love in 2002. Nicole Kidman got nominated for The Others in 2001 and Thora Birch was nominated for Ghost World the same year.
