It appears Red Lily will be a new introduction for Jacqueline Stewart this evening (I'm sorry to say there have been some recently where she is reading a previous introduction word-for-word). Since it was announced that J.S. is leaving her position at the Academy Museum to return to teaching in Chicago, the introductions from the museum location will be coming to an end. Assuming that Prof. Stewart continues as a host for TCM, we will see if she will do further introductions from Chicago or will return to doing them at the Atlanta studio. I'm sure the Academy Museum was happy to provide the backdrop for TCM as a natural promotion for the site.

Saturday, June 29, 4:45 PM, The Narrow Margin with Charles McGraw, Marie Windsor and Jacqueline White. This is the movie that really made me appreciate McGraw and Windsor. 1 hour, 11 minutes and all of them well done.
The remake with Gene Hackman and Anne Archer in 1990 is one where the remake is just as good. Maybe because it is different enough to make it interesting - and it is well done. Of course VIA Railroad's Canadian is a much more impressive train.

Last I checked, Jacqueline White is still alive, at either 99 or 101 depending on which reference source you believe.

Didn't TCM move their studio to LA a few years back? I might be wrong, but when they revealed the new set, I thought they said it was in California.

I believe the one studio they have left is still in Atlanta. (Of course, Eddie is doing his introductions locally in California.)

Both of these articles mention Ben going to Atlanta once a month for shooting:

The only reason TCM was in Atlanta is because that is where Ted Turner lived and his first station was located and so TCM, CNN, TBS, etc. were in Atlanta.
Surprised TCM hasn't moved to LA long time ago as that is where the history of movie making in US is. Although NYC has a share. Ironically, movie making is moving to the South in many circumstances as that is where they get the best deals for cheaper production costs.

The Narrow Margin

Post by ElCid »

The Narrow Margin comes on at 4:45 PM ET Saturday (today). This is a great little mystery/crime/film-noir movie that centers on a train ride. Charles McGraw and Marie Windsor are main characters and gave great performances. Heard on a TCM featurette that the soundtrack is just train sounds and no music. I'll have to watch again to verify that.
While trains are featured, the exterior shots are often "stock train footage" and may not be accurate for a first class Chicago to LA passenger train.
Train Info. Based on what I have found out, The Forty-Niner was an actual Southern Pacific/Union Pacific/Chicago & North Western jointly operated train between Chicago and LA. Central Pacific's Golden West Limited was fictisous, but Santa Fe did operate the California Limited between Chicago and LA via La Junta, CO. There are some scenes at the passenger station there.
Most of the passenger car exteriors are of Southern Pacific cars.
As I noted in an earlier post, the movie was remade in 1990 as Narrow Margin.

Marie Windsor (The Narrow Margin). If you want to "see more" of her, watch Swamp Women, 1956. Not nearly as good, but entertaining and in color. With Touch Connors as about the only male really in it.

The Narrow Margin. Found the commentary interesting in that Howard Hughes, wanted to remake the entire movie with Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell and held it until coerced into releasing the original as was seen today. The producer/director(?) got Hughes to release it in exchange for his making His Kind of Woman, which is another excellent movie.
As much as I like Mitchum and Russell (a lot), I think McGraw and Windsor made the movie theirs. Mitchum and Russell would have overshadowed the story too much.

Come Fly With Me

Post by ElCid »

Come Fly With Me is another amusing movie I discovered thanks to TCM. It is entertaining and presents a rose colored picture of what it was like to be a stewardess (flight attendant) and to fly on planes in the early 60's. Not to mention another romantic Dolores Hart (future Mother Superior) presentation.
My niece is a flight attendant currently.
