Re: Coming up on TCM...
If you missed Forty Guns (1957) back on May 18 when TCM had the technical issue, they have rescheduled it for 6:15 PM Eastern time this afternoon. Fingers crossed.

As I wrote on the old TCM Message Boards, txfilmfan, I envy your Houston visits: With the accumulation of HELLFIGHTERS, NASA and baseball during my childhood, I think I would've really appreciated Houston when I was an older kid...txfilmfan wrote: ↑July 12th, 2024, 6:17 pmNever have seen this all the way through. Growing up we always went to Astros games when visiting relatives in south Texas. The Astros programs in the 60s and 70s always featured non-baseball events held at the Dome, as it was still a unique venue until the Superdome opened. They had photos and stories about conventions, concerts, Billy Graham, the '73 Battle of the Sexes, NCAA basketball, rodeos, and photos from the filming of this movie. It always intrigued me, but I've never sat through what seemed to be a rather quirky film
I have it set to record on my DVR. Maybe this time I'll get through it.

In the 60s, the groundskeepers actually used to come out and vacuum between innings. And they did wear spacesuit uniforms, at least through the Apollo era. The ushers (always female in those days) wore uniforms that gave a space-age flight attendant vibe.NoShear wrote: ↑July 15th, 2024, 10:03 amAs I wrote on the old TCM Message Boards, txfilmfan, I envy your Houston visits: With the accumulation of HELLFIGHTERS, NASA and baseball during my childhood, I think I would've really appreciated Houston when I was an older kid...txfilmfan wrote: ↑July 12th, 2024, 6:17 pmNever have seen this all the way through. Wow-I had no idea Queen Elizabeth was a Spacette!
….and I love Brewster McCloud…it may be an oddball movie, but I enjoyed it.

I think she looks like a cross between QEII and Minnie Pearl!

And don't forget that real spacemen periodically visited Houston's "Eighth Wonder of the World" as well - including the first twins of Gemini:txfilmfan wrote: ↑July 15th, 2024, 4:37 pmIn the 60s, the groundskeepers actually used to come out and vacuum between innings. Another cool collision of Houston and NASA occurred during the historic Frien7dship flight that intersected with a flame which rose about thirty stories out of the Sahara Desert and was seen by John Glenn from his orbiting capsule:

Forty Guns is fairly good (say, three stars out of five), but overrated, like many of Samuel Fuller's films. It tells you something about Stanwyck's career at this point that she doesn't get her name above the title. Fuller gets his name above the title, and although Stanwyck is billed above Barry Sullivan, he has much more screen time.
Re: Coming up on TCM...
I wasn't expecting a classic, but I'm still miffed! Not a big Fuller fan (from what I've seen at least) so my expectations aren't too high. Still it's' one of the few Stanwyck films I haven't seen yet. Oh well, maybe it'll be on again. Thanks for the info.kingrat wrote: ↑July 17th, 2024, 10:36 am Forty Guns is fairly good (say, three stars out of five), but overrated, like many of Samuel Fuller's films. I'm a fan of Fuller's noir films; Pickup On South Street, House of Bamboo, and The Crimson Kimono, as well as the neo-noirs Underworld U.S.A, and The Naked Kiss (mainly for Constance Ford). (not a fan of Shock Corridor).Hibi wrote: ↑July 17th, 2024, 11:49 amI wasn't expecting a classic, but I'm still miffed! Many of his other films are war films and I'm not a fan of those.

Dargo and txfilmfan, I wonder if the aged Spacette is the one - a non-nude - who was featured in the following cover piece:
Of Texas and PLAYBOY - by way of California:

Ya know NS, I'd say, yes, there is a resemblance between the older lady and the cover girl there. Yep, maybe that was her 50-some years in the past.
Did you notice a young Michael Caine standing at the bar and in the background there?
