August 2024 Schedule Posted, Summer Under the Stars
Re: August 2024 Schedule Posted, Summer Under the Stars
I read some online reviews of the book today and it sounds pretty racist and condescending. According to imdb or wiki (can't remember), they took the shell of the book and wrote pretty much from scratch for the film.

I remember thinking that Edna May Oliver was extremely entertaining in her Oscar-nominated role in that film.....

To be fair, Edna May Oliver was always entertaining.

I always cringe, however, whenever Claudette, whose character is supposed to be a sophisticated 20th century city girl, freaks out after spotting Geoduck and Crowbar, two eccentric Native American locals. They play her fear for laughs, with hubby Fred whispering "You read too many Westerns". You'd think she was back in DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK, the scene where Chief Big Tree wanders into her and Henry Fonda's colonial American cottage.

GHOSTS ON THE LOOSE with Bela Lugosi's infamous "sh*t" sneeze!!
Rich, what say you? Did Bela actually utter that four letter word (Always sounds like it to my ears) after getting dust in his nose by an East Side kid? Or was this merely Lugosi's heavy Hungarian accent, lol?

Leo Gorcey day was yesterday. I saw bits and pieces and it was interesting to see how his character developed from the Dead End Kids to the East Side Kids and finally The Bowery Boys.
In the original Dead End (1937) , Gorcey was Spit, the "rat" who would squeal on his fellow gang members. He repeated this type in the follow up Crime School (1938). In Angels With Dirty Faces (1938) he was a mouthy gang member who gets smacked and warned about "people who talk" by gangster Rocky Sullivan (James Cagney). This also happened in real life, as Gorcey was fond of ad-libbing and Cagney clocked him. Co-star Huntz Hall verified this, saying Leo hated Cagney for the rest of his life. Gorcey's final Dead End Kid film was On Dress Parade (1939), he played the only troublemaker among the group as they all went to West Point. Even Huntz Hall did not play his usual dimwit character.
The East Side Kids films had Leo playing Muggs, now the leader of the gang. This was the weakest era for the gang, the films were often dull and looked very cheap.
The Bowery Boys films were still low budget but looked better than the East Side Kids films. Leo was now Slip, still the leader and master of the malaprop. Huntz Hall was firmly into the role of the dimwit as Sach. Some of these films were fairly entertaining like Blues Busters (1950), Ghost Chasers (1951) and The Bowery Boys Meet The Monsters (1955).

Yeah, I read they just used the basic story of the book and wrote a whole new screenplay. So I doubt much of it is the same. For one thing she lived in WA!!!Bronxgirl48 wrote: ↑August 29th, 2024, 6:02 pmHibi wrote: ↑August 28th, 2024, 8:52 amI wonder how close to the book the script was. Nice summary of the "kids". I wasn't going to watch any of the films but did check out one of the Bowery Boys films. I was surprised by the quality of the production (I guess I had seen East Side Kids films and as noted their production quality is weak). Thus I watched the next film.Detective Jim McLeod wrote: ↑August 30th, 2024, 7:47 am Leo Gorcey day was yesterday. So does Bela really say "Oh sh*t!" instead of "Ah Choo!" when he sneezes??
You decide!

If one of the Dead End Kids was given a day I wish it had been Bobby Jordan.
I love him in A SLIGHT CASE OF MURDER.
