Leo Gorcey, Master of the Malaprop!

Not an easy feat.

Such a refreshingly offbeat, "cult-y" choice for staid old TCM.

She came across to me as authentic, just a nice down-to-earth borough girl living next door who happened to be blessed with a timeless "maiden-in-the-tower" face -- that is, until she opened her mouth but who am I to speak, coming from Da Bronx. Too bad Page retired at such an early age. I could see her being effective playing either a blowsy kind of dame or innocent victim in late 1940's noir.

I'm looking forward to watching this sort-of trilogy of movies featuring Anita Page:

All three movie also feature Joan Crawford, but they play different characters in each of the movies

Flaming youth!

Joan is a strong screen presence in all three, even that early in her career. Anita, however, has her own incandescence.

That is a factual and accurate statement, regardless of if one like Lewis and his work, or not.

I always thought the most influential were Chaplin, Arbuckle, Keaton, Lloyd, and Tati.

Fill me in, James!

4 of those comics were mostly silent film actors, and Tati is French.

Lewis's influence was much later in the 20th century. Also, Karger said 'one of the most' not 'the most'.

Here are a few:

During the 1960 production of The Bellboy, Lewis pioneered the technique of using video cameras and multiple closed circuit monitors, which allowed him to review his performance instantly. This was necessary since he was acting as well as directing. His techniques and methods of filmmaking, documented in his book and his USC class, enabled him to complete most of his films on time and under budget since reshoots could take place immediately instead of waiting for the dailies.

Man in Motion, a featurette for Three on a Couch, features the video system, named "Jerry's Noisy Toy and shows Lewis receiving the Golden Light Technical Achievement award for its development. Lewis stated he worked with the head of Sony to produce the prototype. While he initiated its practice and use, and was instrumental in its development, he did not hold a patent. This practice is now commonplace in filmmaking.

With those five I was thinking more along the lines of how they influenced future comedians in terms of their film personas, interpretation of character, physicality and the like, not so much their "auteur" filmmaking techniques. For instance, Chaplin was the Little Tramp against the cold cruel world; Arbuckle the man-child; Keaton the analytical but put-upon weakling; Lloyd the brash young modern guy, and Tati, through his Monsieur Hulot, life's gentle and non-judgemental observer.

Whew, lol.

Yea, I wonder if by influential you were thinking only along the line of the techniques you mention here. So, thanks for clarifying that. In that area Lewis wasn't influential. It was behind the camera as a director of his own films.

Though pretend-boy comedians like Pee-wee Herman were certainly influenced by Jerry Lewis, too.

Never seen Tati and never cared for Chaplin, Arbuckle or Keaton. As for Jerry Lewis, hate him and all his roles. While I enjoy the stories in movies in which he co-starred with Dean Martin, I cannot stomach them as soon as silly, stupid Lewis shows up.
I know that is the way the character is supposed to be played, but just cannot take it - and he pretty much did it in all his roles with which I am familiar. To such an extent that I cannot even think about him in a serious role, if he ever did one. :)

Lewis liked to insert his own pretentious, vanity versions of Chaplinesque sentimentality (Charlie's was authentic, Jerry imo merely a pretender). When I saw ROCKABYE BABY for the first time I just knew we were going to hear a lullaby sung to the infants and by golly, there was one, lol.

"Grace Kelly was known for having affairs with her leading men"

I guess this is what's meant as the "personal touch" for viewers during intros and outros.

Bless TCM's heart.

I have to admit it surprised me when Alicia Malone so casually mentioned that in the introduction for The Bridges at Toko-Ri.
