Odds Against Tomorrow (1959)

Post by Mr. Arkadin »

Great social drama disguised as a heist film. Robert Ryan and Harry Belafonte don't get much better than this. Gloria Grahame is little more than eye candy, but an interesting film for its time overall. Any other fans of this one?

One of the great late term noirs. Robert Ryan was just a brilliant actor and he was never better as an aging Deep South racist hoodlum throwing in on a bank job with Harry Belafonte and Ed Begley.

We screened this last year in Los Angeles with Kim Hamilton, who played Belafonte's wife, as the special guest. Superb script by the late Abe Polonsky who was still blacklisted and was fronted by John O. Killens.

Robert Wise had so much depth as a director. Rare that an ex-editor became such a variant storyteller. The Body Snatcher, Odds Against Tomorrow and The Sound of Music. How about that!
