Whistle Stop (1946)

"Beautiful Mary returns to her small hometown after many years from Chicago wearing a mink coat and carrying an expensive cigarette case. Her arrival causes long standing enmities to surface between two of her old boyfriends, Kenny Veech, a loafing gambler, and debonair Lew Lentz, owner of a local nightclub. Their deep-seated animosity repeatedly results in antagonism and fights as they compete for Mary's affections. Kenny's friend Gitlo, a bartender in Lentz' club, enlists Kenny in an aborted plan to rob Lentz of $15,000 in profits from sponsoring a local carnival. Lentz retaliates by framing both men for murder."

Whistle Stop was the first film noir/crime & Ava Gardner film that I had the pleasure of seeing.

I thought both she & George Raft were very good in the film. The plot was also intriguing.

Any thoughts on this film?

I liked this movie too, Amber. Despite its low budget, the cast was excellent. It was previously mentioned on this thread:

Oh, please don't feel that it was a correction. I just wanted you to know that others liked the movie too. I am fond of Victor McLaglen's performance and think that Ava sizzles here--even if she looks a bit awkward when she has to speak lines at this very early stage.

I agree Ava does sizzle even after coming off as a bit awkward. :)

Thank you for letting me know about the other thread. Very interesting to read!
