Here are the academy's choices for 1968:

Romeo and Juliet
Funny Girl
Ice Station Zebra
Oliver!
Star!

And here are my choices:

2001: A Space Odyssey
The Battle of Algiers

Clearly these are the first two choices. The first is one of the most stunning visually of all films. The second gives an image of unprecedented realism.

Here are the other three choices:

Once upon a time in the West
The Valley of the Bees
Oliver!

The Color of Pomegranates
Walden/Diaries, Notes and Sketches
Z

As much as I admire Gordon Willis' work on The Godfather, my choice would be Vittorio Storaro's Last Tango In Paris.

For 72, an underrated one for cinematography I would go with is the Soviet western “Seventh Bullet.”
