Wow, Mongo. That poor ol' rascal Errol looks so unhappy in that photo from The Adventures of Don Juan. Hey, I just looked at that Flynn pic again and, uh, jeepers, how did the Production Code boys let that um, rather snug pair of tights pass inspection??...
No wonder director Vincent Sherman said that as filming progressed, Flynn had a hard time staying sober during that film's production. I wonder if the fact that the studio sought to exploit the physically and psychologically exhausted looking star's reputation as a "great lover" might have contributed to his apparent ennui, bordering on despair?
Do you know if there are any candids available from the aborted production of William Tell, which Errol tried to produce in Europe in the early '50s after leaving Warner Bros.? Cinematographer/director Jack Cardiff loved working with Flynn on that project, despite the outcome.

Great pix, Mongo; but there is just no way I'll ever believe that Loretta actually ate that general-issue chow . . I mean, look at her in that shot - you just know she's already looking around for William Bendix, or Hoagie Carmichael, or anybody she can press into choke-down service!

As with the immortal To Kill a Mockingbird, and the greatly underrated True Grit, TH&HN is a film I often re-watch exclusively for the dialogue . . in fact, occasionally, when in just the right mood, I've enjoyed each of those films with an old blanket draped over my TV screen . . as though I were partaking a starkly written radio play.
Mind you, I find nothing to object to with Ms. Bacall's visual performance!

The movie "Tue Grit" is a favorite of mine. The cinematography is superb. I don't know about a blanket over the TV though (perhaps on Halloween).

It's funny I came across this quote last night about Errol's costume in Don Juan in the book People Will Talk by John Kobal, here he is interviewing Vincent Sherman who was the director of Don Juan
Errol designed his own costumes for the movie, and the cameraman said to me once 'I can't photograph that thing' The character didn't have a codpiece-this thing was sticking out thre, you know, in profile. It was alright straight on but in a profile shot it was awful.

More great stuff. The Al Jolson picture is scary, is he in blackface or is that a tan? Tallulah seems pretty drunk in that pic. Oh and the Boris Karloff picture is giving me bizarre nightmares.
I like all the wardrobe test photos. Not sure why. Ditto the Joan Crawford pictures, not a huge fan, but she photographs well, and she has a certain humanity in her candids(even if they are staged somewhat).
