John Wayne, Lest We Forget

I wonder how many regular kids have that kind of freedom anymore, either!

When I met Ethan here in New York a year or two ago, he told me a little detail about his childhood that also speaks to this subject. He said his father disliked having entourage or personal security around his home, so that even when one night he heard what sounded like a prowler around the house, he remembers his father just getting out of bed like any Dad and going to check things out for himself. Celebrities today have so much personal security which was unknown to the Wayne family, even though he was arguably the most famous man alive.

Not to many I suspect. I know my brothers reaction when I suggested if my niece wanted to come up and ride when he could not drive her was that she get on the train and I would meet her at the station. I may as well have suggested she travelled alone to Afganistan. She was 15.

Thank you for finding that article...I think I enjoyed it the most. Talk about normal life, that may have been the closest he could get to it. I find it amusing that people now find the way the Wild Goose was fitted out to be "spartan".

Happy Birthday to John Wayne, born 106 years ago today. Sometimes I forget that there was once a time when Mr. Wayne was not just a legendary presence (and underrated actor).
