Roman Bohnen - HUAC Victim - Great Character Actor

Post by ken123 »

He was Candy in Of Mice & Men ( Milestone versio ) Dana Andrews father in The Best Years of Our Lives, Mr McNeal in Milestone The Strange Love of Martha Ivers. He died on stage at the left wing Actors Lab in L.A. after being harrasses by the red hunters. Before he went to Hollywod he performed at the very leftist Group Theatre. :(

Thank you for reminding us of this fine actor. I recall him also in DEADLINE AT DAWN, and in EDGE OF DARKNESS, as the little man who kept thinking what he wanted to say to the Nazis and finally proving his bravery.

A consistently fine actor is among my favorite character men. Roman Bohnen was particularly good at portraying the inner turmoil of men who could not fully express all of their feelings in words. Here's a long piece I wrote about his career if you are interested in more about him:

Thank you for excellent review of Roman's career. I had no idea of his age, or that he died so young.
