It is beautiful isn't it? I don't ever remember noticing it in the movie, particularly, but it's so striking as a still. It is very expressionistic, I never realized it. I was just thinking of that scene they show on the Christmas promo on TCM, with Gary on the roof, and you see his cold breath. It's my favorite Capra film.

I know the TCM moment you mean! It made me appreciate that scene, too (and it's a very debated scene, isn't it? Capra had trouble over it, did he not? one of these days I must re-read "The Name Above the Title.")

I seem to remember something about it being too literal a translation of the Christ story, and that Capra was unable to film it in the dark way he originally intended it. Don't take my word for it! You've probably read The Name Above the Title a lot more recently than I have!

I'm going to see Django Unchained simply because whatever Tarantino does, it's different and it's interesting, plus he knows how to make a movie. I also thought he knew classic films and was always respectful of the old masters, but maybe not so much...ah, la publicite!

Why does that make me smile a big fat smile, Jax? You just about wiped out your "Mildred Pierce" opinion with this comment. Yes, he's violent as all hell...but I love his gusto for filmmaking and storytelling. He grabs celluloid by the teeth and lets her rip!!

P.S....I wouldn't dare touch your Nutella. You really are "mi hermana" even if your list is closer to the boys' over at TCM-city. Have a good weekend. BTW...I've gotta ask you about your thoughts about "grey" ladies of Cinema.

Oh my gosh, this is a treasure trove of photos! I adore the one with Jane, Gable just makes her look like a little girl. And Raoul with Leo the lion - there's a perfect combo, I can see Walsh as a lion.

I had seen a promo for that documentary, MissG, it looks like they added on to it. I hope it's a good one, I wasn't fond of the book, but I am quite happy to see a doc made of it.

Maven, PLEASE ask me about those grey ladies... I only just realized a connection between the ladies you like and the ones I have trouble with. It's like being psychoanalyzed, I can't do it myself, I need the help of my movie friends to figure out why I just don't understand Mildred, Kathy, and Leslie. Of the three, I like Kathy best. I also really like Martha Ivers, but I don't know why. And I suppose this should be posted over in Barbara's thread.
