NEW POLL! The SSO Favorite Director
Posted: September 14th, 2011, 6:17 pm
I liked almost anybody that made you realize who in the devil was making the picture.... - Howard Hawks
It's been nearly six months, so it's time for a new Poll.
Again, trying to encompass the myriad interests of our members. Silents and talkies. English and non-English languages. Drama. Comedy. Melodrama. Romance. Action. Musical. Western. Noir. They’re all there for The Favorite Director.
Check out those Sight & Sound, Cahiers du Cinema and Andrew Sarris volumes. Search the SSO threads. And please submit your list of your favorite 15 Directors by end of the day (that’s 11:59pm + 59 seconds CST) Sunday, September 25th.
The rules will remain the same as those in previous polls. You can list your choices in order or leave them unnumbered. Remember, though, if you list them in order, a film receiving a #1 ranking carries more weight than a film carrying a #15 ranking when tabulating the results for the pairings. If you choose not to number your choices, they will all be assigned a value of a #8 pick. It would be helpful to include first and last names (hey...J. Lewis could be Joseph H. Lewis or Jerry Lewis).
After the votes for all the submissions have been counted, we will cut the field down to the top 32 choices to begin our head to head competitions (the #1 Director will go up against the #32 Director, the #2 Director will go up against the #31 Director, etc.). The match-ups continue until only one Director is left sitting in a director's chair. We will crown him or her the SSO Favorite Director of 2011.
Your submissions can be made on this thread starting now, and you have the option to go back and alter, amend or otherwise destroy your list right up to the last second on September 25th . Please share your opinions on some of your nominees that not everybody may be too familiar with.
We encourage all newer members that have not participated in these polls before to get involved. It's all for fun, and it can be very educational. We have previously run polls for the best overall film ever (To Kill a Mockingbird) and we have done the Bestavorite Western (The Searchers), Film Noir (tie: Touch of Evil and Out of the Past), non-comedy Silent (tie: Sunrise and The Crowd), Favorite Musical (Singin’ in the Rain), Favorite Shakespeare Adaptation (Chimes at Midnight) and Favorite Screwball Comedy (What was it? I've been denied access to view that Archive. It's a conspiracy, I tell ya!).
In case of ties, run-offs will be conducted. In case of unforeseen Bizarro World events, the ever-able Associate Justice Knit-Wit and I will make up (in a strictly non-arbitrary fashion) the rules as we go along.
Voice your choice! Cast you votes for your favoritest 15 Directors now!
