I might be one of the few who loved Shelley Duvall in Popeye.
For me, she was better than Robin Williams. More convincing in her role.

I still haven't seen Thieves Like Us but I loved her in 3 Women and she should've got an Oscar nomination for that (she did win at Cannes). Loved her in other things too (Nashville etc.) I've avoided seeing The Shining all these years and have no desire to ever see that. Sad about her mental decline. :(

Really?
I seem to recall saying you don't like horror movies, but THE SHINING is kind of a different kind of "horror movie", and she is SO ****ING GOOD IN IT!!!! if you have the stomach (it's really not scary to me, at least), maybe give it a try some day- the acting in it deserves to be seen.

NICHOLSON falls short in many ways (he was too perfect for the role and put it on autopilot,) but SHELLEY is so good.

Just ask CARRIE FISHER or EDIE BRICKELL....
or ART GARFUNKLE for that matter...

My reply seems to have vanished! I've read so many disparaging things about The Shining over the years, it didn't seem like my cup of tea. Maybe one of these days I'll change my mind and watch it (but if I hate it I'll blame you!!!)

My favorite Shelley Duvall role, in a movie that I like very much.

I'm in the hated it camp - Nicholson mugging is the spotlight. Liked the book which focuses on the the son learning to harness his powers, not the father. Stephen King hated it too and was the driving force on getting a miniseries replacement made. That one is pretty good.

I was not particularly a fan, but did like her Faerie Tale Theater - which is strange 'cause I usually hate that type of stuff.

Faerie Tale Theater, on Showtime, was enjoyable.
I don't remember it extremely well but liked it.
I am not a Jack Nicholson fan.

Wow- I had heard this yesterday & was so saddened. I loved Shelly Duvall’s work and thought she was an outstanding personality. Everyone mentions THE SHINING, but not one news report mentioned her FAERIE TALE THEATER which in my mind was her middle finger to years of Hollywood’s mistreatment-her strongest moment.

I went on a Shelly deep dive a couple of years ago seeing all her movies. I cannot name or even locate one I particularly loved where she played a nurse in a senior home. She was sweet & kind but wasn’t treated well by her peers. Of note was she drove a brightly colored beat up jalopy, possibly a Pacer (anyone recognise that description?)
I thought it was one of the best roles I had seen her in but honestly, she did well in EVERY role, no matter how diverse. She certainly did not deserve the bad press she received through the years.
