And if we had to include two of the Academy's choices?

Picture: no change
Actor: no change
Actress: no change
S. Actor: Hounsou, no change
S. Actress: Clarkson, Harden. This might help Clarkson, since she now has two nominations, and voters may choose the more controversial indie film over the lesser known indie film

Now it's 2004. Here are the Academy's choices:

ACTOR

Don Cheadle – Hotel Rwanda
Johnny Depp – Finding Neverland
Leonardo DiCaprio – The Aviator
Clint Eastwood – Million Dollar Baby
Jamie Foxx – Ray

ACTRESS

Annette Bening – Being Julia
Catalina Sandino Moreno – Maria Full of Grace
Imelda Staunton – Vera Drake
Hilary Swank – Million Dollar Baby
Kate Winslet – Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

SUPPORTING ACTOR

Alan Alda – The Aviator
Thomas Haden Church – Sideways
Jamie Foxx – Collateral
Morgan Freeman – Million Dollar Baby
Clive Owen – Closer

SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Cate Blanchett – The Aviator
Laura Linney – Kinsey
Virginia Madsen – Sideways
Sophie Okonedo – Hotel Rwanda
Natalie Portman – Closer

And here are my choices:

ACTOR

Mathieu Amalric, Kings and Queen
Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, 2046
Jim Carrey, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Don Cheadle, Hotel Rwanda
Bruno Ganz, Downfall

ACTRESS

Imelda Staunton, Vera Drake
Audrey Tautou, A Very Long Engagement
Kate Winslet, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Holly Hunter, The Incredibles
Zhang Ziyi, 2046, House of Flying Daggers

SUPPORTING ACTOR

Michael Gambon, Layer Cake, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Danny Chow Kwok-Kwan, Kung Fu Hustle
Dustin Hoffman, I (Heart) Huckabees
Gaspard Ulliel, A Very Long Engagement
Tom Wilkinson, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Catherine Deneuve, Kings and Queen
Gong Li, 2046
Faye Wong, 2046
Lily Tomlin, I (Heart) Huckabees
Marion Cotillard, Innocence, A Very Long Engagement

And here are the best picture nominees:

The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Incredibles
2046
A Very Long Engagement
The Weeping Meadow

So who would the Academy choose if they had to choose from my choices? For Actor, I suspect they would choose Cheadle, given that he was the only Oscar nominee I choose. For Actress, Staunton got the critic's love, but Winslet is now in a movie nominated for best picture. I think Winslet would win. For supporting actor, I think the Academy would leap at the opportunity to honor a movie as profitable as Harry Potter and choose Gambon. For supporting actress, I suspect they would give it to Tomlin, as the one American.

And what if I had to include two of the Academy's nominees?

Picture: The Aviator, Million Dollar Baby
Actor: Foxx. This would probably lead him to win, as the Academy's actual choice, even though Ray no longer has a best picture nomination.
Actress: no change
S. Actor: Freeman, Church. Freeman probably wins under these circumstances, even if his co-stars aren't nominated.
S. Actress: Okendo, Blanchett. Blanchett wins.

Now it's 2005. Here are the Academy's choices:

ACTOR

Philip Seymour Hoffman – Capote
Terrence Howard – Hustle & Flow
Heath Ledger – Brokeback Mountain
Joaquin Phoenix – Walk the Line
David Strathairn – Good Night, and Good Luck

ACTRESS

Judi Dench – Mrs. Henderson Presents
Felicity Huffman – Transamerica
Keira Knightley – Pride & Prejudice
Charlize Theron – North Country
Reese Witherspoon – Walk the Line

SUPPORTING ACTOR

George Clooney – Syriana
Matt Dillon – Crash
Paul Giamatti – Cinderella Man
Jake Gyllenhaal – Brokeback Mountain
William Hurt – A History of Violence

SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Amy Adams – Junebug
Catherine Keener – Capote
Frances McDormand – North Country
Rachel Weisz – The Constant Gardener
Michelle Williams – Brokeback Mountain

And here are my choices:

ACTOR

Robert Downey Jr, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Issey Ogata, The Sun
Philip Seymour Hoffman, Capote
Viggo Mortensen, A History of Violence
Jeremie Renier, The Child

ACTRESS

Q'Orianka Kilcher, The New World*
Juliette Binoche, Cache
Clotilde Hesme, Regular Lovers
Shu Qi, Three Times
Jodie Foster, Flightplan

SUPPORTING ACTOR

Ed Harris, A History of Violence
Val Kilmer, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Christian Bale, The New World
Liam Neeson, Batman Begins
Jack Black, King Kong

SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Rachel Weisz, The Constant Gardener
Michelle Monaghan, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Tilda Swinton, Broken Flowers, The Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Maria Bello, A History of Violence
Scarlett Johansson, Match Point

And here are the nominees for best picture:

The Child
The Death of Mr. Lazarescu
Howl's Moving Castle
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
The New World

So who would the Academy choose if they had to choose from my nominees? For actor, Hoffman was the clear critical favorite, with the only weakness that he now is not in a movie nominated for best picture. For Actress Kilcher actually has a good chance, fighting three foreign actresses and a nominee who already had in a movie and whom nobody considered a serious nominee. For supporting actor, Harris got the most critical love, even if the Academy ignored him. And the Academy chose Weisz in real life without a best picture nomination to back her up, so they are likely to do here as well.

And if we had to include two of the Academy's choices:

Picture: Capote, Munich
Actor: Ledger, no change
Actress: To be honest, I have not seen any of the five nominees from this year, the only year for which that is the case. But I'll choose Witherspoon and Knightley sight unseen. Witherspoon wins
S. Actor: Gyllenhal, Clooney. I suspect Clooney wins.
S. Actress: Keener, no change
