Now it's 1997. Here are the Academy's choices:

ACTOR

Matt Damon – Good Will Hunting
Robert Duvall – The Apostle
Peter Fonda – Ulee’s Gold
Dustin Hoffman – Wag the Dog
Jack Nicholson – As Good as It Gets

ACTRESS

Helena Bonham Carter – The Wings of the Dove
Julie Christie – Afterglow
Judi Dench – Mrs. Brown
Helen Hunt – As Good as It Gets
Kate Winslet – Titanic

SUPPORTING ACTOR

Robert Forster – Jackie Brown
Anthony Hopkins – Amistad
Greg Kinnear – As Good as It Gets
Burt Reynolds – Boogie Nights
Robin Williams – Good Will Hunting

SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Kim Basinger – L.A. Confidential
Joan Cusack – In & Out
Minnie Driver – Good Will Hunting
Julianne Moore – Boogie Nights
Gloria Stuart – Titanic

And here are my choices:

ACTOR

Kevin Spacey, L.A. Confidential
Ian Holm, The Sweet Hereafter
Aleksei Ananishnov, Mother and Son
Homayoun Ershadi, A Taste of Cherry
Michael Douglas, The Game

ACTRESS

Gudrun Geyer, Mother and Son
Sarah Polley, The Sweet Hereafter
Pam Grier, Jackie Brown
Patricia Arquette, Lost Highway
Jodie Foster, Contact

SUPPORTING ACTOR

Steve Martin, The Spanish Prisoner
Ian Holm, The Fifth Element
Burt Reynolds, Boogie Nights
Masato Hagiwara, Cure
James Cromwell, L.A. Confidential

SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Julianne Moore, Boogie Nights
Courtney Cox, Scream 2
Joan Cusack, In & Out
Heather Graham, Boogie Nights
Jennifer Tilly, Liar Liar

And here are the choices for best picture:

Boogie Nights
The Fifth Element
Kundun
L.A. Confidential
Princess Mononoke

So who would the Academy choose if they had to choose from my choices? For Actor, I suspect Spacey: they had just given him a supporting award two years before, but they would give him an actor award two years later. I suspect L.A. Confidential would be the front-runner in Titanic's
absence. I suspect Polley would win for best actress, given how underwhelming the Academy would likely find the other nominees (a strange Russian film, an unpopular Lynch and an underwhelming Zemeckis film). For supporting actor, Reynolds was the one nominee, he did win the Globe, and while in real life, Robin Williams won, Reynolds might get "he deserves an oscar now" vote. Moore would probably win supporting actress, she did get more critical support at the time.

And if we had to include two of the Academy's nominees?

Picture: Good Will Hunting
Actor: Damon, Fonda. Damon does have a shot now
Actress: Winslet, Hunt. Hunt was the actual winner, so she'd probably win notwithstanding her film not getting a lot of nominations.
S. Actor: Williams. He's probably also win, as the winner in real life
S. Actress: No change

Now it's 1998. Here are the Academy's choices:

ACTOR

Roberto Benigni – Life Is Beautiful
Tom Hanks – Saving Private Ryan
Ian McKellen – Gods and Monsters
Nick Nolte – Affliction
Edward Norton – American History X

ACTRESS

Cate Blanchett – Elizabeth
Fernanda Montenegro – Central Station
Gwyneth Paltrow – Shakespeare in Love
Meryl Streep – One True Thing
Emily Watson – Hilary and Jackie

SUPPORTING ACTOR

James Coburn – Affliction
Robert Duvall – A Civil Action
Ed Harris – The Truman Show
Geoffrey Rush – Shakespeare in Love
Billy Bob Thornton – A Simple Plan

SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Kathy Bates – Primary Colors
Brenda Blethyn – Little Voice
Judi Dench – Shakespeare in Love
Rachel Griffiths – Hilary and Jackie
Lynn Redgrave – Gods and Monsters

And here are my choices:

ACTOR

Bruno Ganz, Eternity and a Day
Tom Hanks, Saving Private Ryan
Fele Martinez, Lovers of the Arctic Circle
George Clooney, Out of Sight
Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Flowers of Shanghai

ACTRESS

Cameron Diaz, There's Something About Mary
Najwa Nimri, Lovers of the Arctic Circle
Thandie Newton, Besieged
Gwyneth Paltrow, Shakespeare in Love
Cate Blanchett, Elizabeth

SUPPORTING ACTOR

Geoffrey Rush, Elizabeth
Bill Murray, Rushmore, Wild Things
Jim Caviezel, The Thin Red Line
Kiefer Sutherland, Dark City
Philip Seymour Hoffman, Happiness, The Big Lebowski

SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Thandie Newton, Beloved
Branka Katic, Black Cat, White Cat
Daryl Hannah, The Gingerbread Man
Michelle Reis, Flowers of Shanghai
Chloe Sevigny, The Last Days of Disco

And the best picture nominees are:

Eternity and a Day
Khrustaylov, my Car!
Lovers of the Arctic Circle
Saving Private Ryan
The Thin Red Line

So who would the Academy choose from my choices? For Actor, Hanks is the obvious front-runner, given he is fighting three foreign language nominees and is also in a best picture nominee. For Actress, Nimri is the only one from a best picture nominee. Paltrow is the actual winner and so might win here, though she is no longer in a best picture nominee. Diaz and Blanchett got some critical love, but I suspect Paltrow might win again. For supporting actor, I think it's between Rush and Murray. Since Rush won in reality two years earlier, he might have the edge. For supporting actress we have five movies that the Academy did not nominate, got little critical love, and were not particularly successful. I think Newton has the edge, since with two acting nominations, the Academy might feel obliged to give her the lesser one.

Picture: No change
Actor: McKellan, no change

S. Actor: Duvall, Rush. No change. I don't think voters given a choice between Rush's performances inElizabeth and Shakespeare in Love will choose the latter
S. Actress: Bates, Dench. I think Dench is popular enough to win

Now it's 1999. Here are the Academy's choices:

ACTOR

Russell Crowe – The Insider
Richard Farnsworth – The Straight Story
Sean Penn – Sweet and Lowdown
Kevin Spacey – American Beauty
Denzel Washington – The Hurricane

ACTRESS

Annette Bening – American Beauty
Janet McTeer – Tumbleweeds
Julianne Moore – The End of the Affair
Meryl Streep – Music of the Heart
Hilary Swank – Boys Don’t Cry

SUPPORTING ACTOR

Michael Caine – The Cider House Rules
Tom Cruise – Magnolia
Michael Clarke Duncan – The Green Mile
Jude Law – The Talented Mr. Ripley
Haley Joel Osment – The Sixth Sense

SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Toni Collette – The Sixth Sense
Angelina Jolie – Girl, Interrupted
Catherine Keener – Being John Malkovich
Samantha Morton – Sweet and Lowdown
Chloë Sevigny – Boys Don’t Cry

And here are my choices:

ACTOR

Marcello Mazzarella, Time Regained
Bob Hoskins, Felicity's Journey
Ralph Fiennes, The End of the Affair
Tom Cruise, Eyes Wide Shut
Denis Lavant, Beau Travail

ACTRESS

Hilary Swank, Boys Don't Cry
Emile Dequenne, Rosetta
Julianne Moore, The End of the Affair
Heather Donahue, The Blair Witch Project
Kirsten Dunst, The Virgin Suicides, Dick

SUPPORTING ACTOR

John Malkovich, Time Regained, Being John Malkovich
Hugo Weaving, The Matrix
John C. Reilly, Magnolia
Tom Cruise, Magnolia
Philip Seymour Hoffman, Magnolia, The Talented Mr. Ripley

SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Melora Walters, Magnolia
Julianne Moore, Magnolia
Nicole Kidman, Eyes Wide Shut
Catherine Deneuve, Time Regained
Emmanuelle Beart, Time Regained

And the nominees for best picture are

Magnolia
The Matrix
South Park: Bigger, Longer and Unct
Time Regained
Toy Story 2

So who would win with my choices? For actor, I've already given awards for Cruise and Fiennes. Perhaps that might help Hoskins. For Actress Swank wins as she did in reality. For Supporting Actor, Malkovich, Cruise and Hoffman got some critical love. I think Hoffman might be the respectable choice, though I can't rule out Weaving, once his movie got a best picture nomination. For supporting actress, Moore got the most critical love, and might win here, though she already won two years earlier.

Now it's 2000. Here are the Academy's choices:

ACTOR

Javier Bardem – Before Night Falls
Russell Crowe – Gladiator
Tom Hanks – Cast Away
Ed Harris – Pollock
Geoffrey Rush – Quills

ACTRESS

Joan Allen – The Contender
Juliette Binoche – Chocolat
Ellen Burstyn – Requiem for a Dream
Laura Linney – You Can Count on Me
Julia Roberts – Erin Brockovich

SUPPORTING ACTOR

Jeff Bridges – The Contender
Willem Dafoe – Shadow of the Vampire
Benicio Del Toro – Traffic
Albert Finney – Erin Brockovich
Joaquin Phoenix – Gladiator

SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Judi Dench – Chocolat
Marcia Gay Harden – Pollock
Kate Hudson – Almost Famous
Frances McDormand – Almost Famous
Julie Walters – Billy Elliot

And here are my choices:

ACTOR

John Cusack, High Fidelity
Tony Leung Chiu-wai, In the Mood For Love
Guy Pearce, Memento
Jared Leto, Requiem for a Dream
Wu Nien-Jen, Yi Yi

ACTRESS

Julia Roberts, Erin Brockovich
Maggie Cheung, In the Mood for Love
Gillian Anderson, The House of Mirth
Bjork, Dancer in the Dark
Ellen Burstyn, Requiem for a Dream

SUPPORTING ACTOR

Joe Pantoliano, Memento
Jack Black, High Fidelity
Albert Finney, Erin Brockovich
Jonathan Chang, Yi Yi*
Marlon Wayans, Requiem for a Dream

SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Aurelia Petit, La Commune (Paris 1871)
Jennifer Connelly, Requiem for a Dream
Catherine Zeta-Jones, Traffic
Chloe Sevigny, American Psycho
Catherine Deneuve, Dancer in the Dark

And here are my choices for best picture:

La Commune (Paris 1871)
The Gleaners and I
In the Mood for Love
Memento
Requiem for a Dream

So who would win if they had to choose from my nominees? For Actor, none of my choices got much critical love, but High Fidelity had a much bigger profile than the other nominees. For actress, Roberts was a clear winner at the time, and the Academy's real choice. For supporting actor, I suppose Finney, as the only actual nominee. For Supporting actress, I think Connelly has a shot, given the movie got four acting nominations and would probably be the best picture front-runner. Not to mention that the Academy did give her an oscar just a year later.

Now it's 2001. Here are the Academy's choice:

ACTOR

Russell Crowe – A Beautiful Mind
Sean Penn – I Am Sam
Will Smith – Ali
Denzel Washington – Training Day
Tom Wilkinson – In the Bedroom

ACTRESS

Halle Berry – Monster’s Ball
Judi Dench – Iris
Nicole Kidman – Moulin Rouge
Sissy Spacek – In the Bedroom
Renée Zellweger – Bridget Jones’s Diary

SUPPORTING ACTOR

Jim Broadbent – Iris
Ethan Hawke – Training Day
Ben Kingsley – Sexy Beast
Ian McKellen – The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Jon Voight – Ali

SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Jennifer Connelly – A Beautiful Mind
Helen Mirren – Gosford Park
Maggie Smith – Gosford Park
Marisa Tomei – In the Bedroom
Kate Winslet – Iris

And here are my choices:

ACTOR

Joel Haley Osment, A.I. Artificial Intelligence*
Tom Wilkinson, In the Bedroom
Elijah Wood, The Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring
Gene Hackman, The Royal Tenenbaums
Aurelien Recoing, Time Out

ACTRESS

Naomi Watts, Mulholland Drive
Thora Birch, Ghost World
Maribel Verdu, Y Tu Mama Tambien
Nicole Kidman, The Others
Isabelle Huppert, The Piano Teacher

SUPPORTING ACTOR

Ian McKellen, The Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring
Steve Buscemi, Ghost World
Jude Law, A.I. Artificial Intelligence
Orlando Bloom, The Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring
Clive Owen, Gosford Park

SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Marisa Tomei, In the Bedroom
Helen Mirren, Gosford Park
Maggie Smith, Gosford Park
Gwyneth Paltrow, The Royal Tenenbaums
Scarlett Johansson, Ghost World

And the nominees for best picture are

A.I.: Artificial Intelligence
Ghost World
In the Bedroom
The Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring
Mulholland Drive

So who would the Academy choose if they had to choose from my nominees? Wilkinson got the most love from the critics groups, but Hackman has never won a lead oscar and could win this time. Watss also got the most critical love and would likely win this time. For supporting actor Buscemi got the most love, but given my choices The Lord of the Rings would be the overwhelming favorite and I think McKellan would win. For supporting actress Mirren is likely to win, since she was (a) a real nominee (b) got a lot of critical love (c) hadn't won before and (d) got the Brit cachet.

Now it's 2002. Here are the Academy's choices:

ACTOR

Adrien Brody – The Pianist
Nicolas Cage – Adaptation
Michael Caine – The Quiet American
Daniel Day-Lewis – Gangs of New York
Jack Nicholson – About Schmidt

ACTRESS

Salma Hayek – Frida
Nicole Kidman – The Hours
Diane Lane – Unfaithful
Julianne Moore – Far from Heaven
Renée Zellweger – Chicago

SUPPORTING ACTOR

Chris Cooper – Adaptation
Ed Harris – The Hours
Paul Newman – Road to Perdition
John C. Reilly – Chicago
Christopher Walken – Catch Me If You Can

SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Kathy Bates – About Schmidt
Julianne Moore – The Hours
Queen Latifah – Chicago
Meryl Streep – Adaptation
Catherine Zeta-Jones – Chicago

And here are my choices:

ACTOR

Adrien Brody, The Pianist
Adam Sandler, Punch-Drunk Love
Ralph Fiennes, Spider
Nicolas Cage, Adaptation
Markku Peltou, The Man Without a Past

ACTRESS

Mania Akbari, Ten
Diane Lane, Unfaithful
Jodie Foster, Panic Room
Samantha Morton, Morvern Callar
Zhao Tao, Unknown Pleasures

SUPPORTING ACTOR

Sergei Dontsov, Russian Ark
Andy Serkis, The Lord of the Rings: the Two Towers
Forest Whitaker, Panic Room
Amin Maher, Ten
Philip Seymour Hoffman, 25th Hour/Punch-Drunk Love

SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Catherine Zeta-Jones, Chicago
Meryl Streep, Adaptation
Kristen Stewart, Panic Room*
Kirsten Dunst, Spider-Man
Emily Watson, Punch-Drunk Love

And here are the choices for best picture:

Femme Fatale
The Lord of the Rings: the two Towers
The Pianist
Russian Ark
Spirited Away

So who would the Academy have chosen if they had to choose from my choices. For actor, Brody wins as he did in reality, and The Pianist may now be the front-runner for best picture, as it came close to beating Chicago in real life. For actress, Lane wins against three more obscure films and past winner Foster. For Supporting Actor, none of my choices got any critical love. But I think the Academy might choose Serkis if they had the option of choosing a virtual performance. For supporting actress, I think Zeta-Jones might win even though Chicago is now excluded from the major categories.

Now it's 2003. Here are the Academy's choices:

ACTOR

Johnny Depp – Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
Ben Kingsley – House of Sand and Fog
Jude Law – Cold Mountain
Bill Murray – Lost in Translation
Sean Penn – Mystic River

ACTRESS

Keisha Castle-Hughes – Whale Rider
Diane Keaton – Something’s Gotta Give
Samantha Morton – In America
Charlize Theron – Monster
Naomi Watts – 21 Grams

SUPPORTING ACTOR

Alec Baldwin – The Cooler
Benicio Del Toro – 21 Grams
Djimon Hounsou – In America
Tim Robbins – Mystic River
Ken Watanabe – The Last Samurai

SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Shohreh Aghdashloo – House of Sand and Fog
Patricia Clarkson – Pieces of April
Marcia Gay Harden – Mystic River
Holly Hunter – Thirteen
Renée Zellweger – Cold Mountain

And here are my choices

ACTOR

Johnny Depp, Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl
Sean Penn, Mystic River
Bill Murray, Lost in Translation
Viggo Mortensen, The Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King
Paul Giamatti, American Splendor

ACTRESS

Samantha Morton, In America
Nicole Kidman, Dogville
Charlize Theron, Monster
Ellen DeGeneres, Finding Nemo
Hope Davis, American Splendor

SUPPORTING ACTOR

John Hurt, Dogville
Sean Astin, The Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King
Yoo Ji-Tae, Oldboy
Tim Robbins, Mystic River
Johnny Depp, Once Upon a Time in Mexico

SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Yeo Jin-Ha, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...and Spring
Kang Hye-jung, Oldboy
Christina Ricci, Monster
Yang Kuei Mei, Goodbye, Dragon Inn
Patricia Clarkson, Dogville

And the nominees for best picture are:

Finding Nemo
In America
The Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King
Mystic River
Oldboy

So who would win if the Academy chose from my nominees? Theron would win best Actress, as she won in reality and there was no clear alternative among the critics' groups. And while Penn and Robbins also won in reality and got critical support, the fact Mortenson and Astin were nominated in what was clearly The Return of the King's year makes them the frontrunner. As for supporting actress, Ricci is the clear favorite against three foreign films and von Trier's relentlessly avant-garde film.
