MUSINGS, PONDERINGS, RUMINATIONS AND FANCIES
Re: MUSINGS, PONDERINGS, RUMINATIONS AND FANCIES
I think the Savoy was renovated a few years ago. I went to a party there about eight years ago, which was after the renovation. But perhaps only part of the hotel was renovated.
A few decades ago, a friend who knew Victoria de los Angeles took me up to meet her, in her room there. It was vast! But of course, she was a diva, though not personality-wise. She was lovely.

I adore her ... anyway.

At the Barbican waiting for Kiss Me Kate. I don’t know why but I always get Clockwork Orange vibes every time I come here.
Re: MUSINGS, PONDERINGS, RUMINATIONS AND FANCIES
I miss the RSC days at the Barbican, great performances in the big theater coming down from Stratford's main theater, and in the Pit, coming down from the Swan in Stratford. The first time I was there was in the Summer of 1982, the year it opened, to see The Winter's Tale with Patrick Stewart and All's Well that Ends Well with Peggy Ashcroft.
Let us know how Kate is. So many revivals of classical Broadway musicals on in London at the moment: Kate, Dolly, Fiddler, Cabaret.

They hold your eyes open and force you to watch the plays?

So then NOT the same "Victoria de L.A." who performed five shows weekly at the Diva Royale Drag Queen Show along North Cahuenga, just south of Hollywood Blvd then, right Swithin???Swithin wrote: ↑August 16th, 2024, 6:05 pm I think the Savoy was renovated a few years ago. (...jus' wonderin')

This is the lady in question (1923-2005). As far as I know, she never performed along North Cahuenga, whatever that is. Though she wore lots of drag.Dargo2 wrote: ↑August 17th, 2024, 5:33 pmSo then NOT the same "Victoria de L.A." who performed five shows weekly at the Diva Royale Drag Queen Show along North Cahuenga, just south of Hollywood Blvd then, right Swithin???Swithin wrote: ↑August 16th, 2024, 6:05 pm I think the Savoy was renovated a few years ago. Sorry, couldn't resist the joke there, as the name "Victoria de los Angeles" kind'a sounded like a drag name to me.
Now, not being that big an opera aficionado, I have to admit I wasn't familiar with her. However, and after reading your first posting in which you mentioned her, I did Google search her and found that she was noted as being highly regarded in her field, and within her Wiki page it was stated that she has/had often been compared to two other famed operatic sopranos whose names even I recognize...Maria Callas and Joan Sutherland.
And so, thanks for your follow-up reply to me here and for posting that video of her and so now to have become familiar with the talented lady.
(...and so with this now today making TWO things I learned today in the field of music...the other being and in the "Question about site function" thread that John Bonham's opening drum solo in the Led Zepplin recording "Rock and Roll" had actually been a copy of Little Richard's drummer Charles Connor's opening drum riff in "Keep A-Knockin')

Yeah, and I've heard the architects who designed that stuff were some of THE meanest, nastiest and all-together orneriest architects you'd never wanna meet.
(...especially in some dark alley behind the buildings they designed)

Is there a jinx about TCM? They seem to have this morbid habit of airing a film with someone who dies just before or just after the, airing. Alain Delon just had his SUTS day, and now he is dead.

Alain Delon was not suts. Jean Paul Belmondo was suts and Alain Delon was his costar in Borsalino which was one of the movies that aired.CinemaInternational wrote: ↑August 18th, 2024, 5:24 pm Is there a jinx about TCM? Re: MUSINGS, PONDERINGS, RUMINATIONS AND FANCIES
Well CI, considering that the vast majority of TCM programing consists of movies starring people who ARE already dead, wouldn't ya think this sort'a thing would just be a case of "The Laws of Probability"?CinemaInternational wrote: ↑August 18th, 2024, 5:24 pm Is there a jinx about TCM? And so then with the further thought here being that anyone who IS or WAS old enough to have starred in something TCM was showing at any given moment, was probably just about ready to kick the ol' bucket anyway!
(...or, "buy the farm", or "peg out", or...well, you get the idea by now, I'm sure)
