So I wonder how they decided who got the "Miss" title and who didn't?

Looks like Crawford's yarn and knitting needles are sitting in her chair.
Yea, some of the ones with 'miss' were married at the time (E.g. Fontaine to Brian Aherne). Crawford and Tone were divorced, thus and she was a 'miss' when The Woman was filmed.

Shearer was a widow. Russell had yet to marry (she would a year after the film was released). Goddard status with Chaplin was confusing.

Maybe it has to do with if the actress was under a fixed contract with MGM? all those without a 'miss' appear to be.
Miss is just traditionally the polite way to refer to a woman. In elementary school, we were always told to call the teachers “miss” even when they are married because Mrs is impolite.

But that still leaves the question why whoever created these chairs decided to be polite to some of the gals and not the others. Again, could it be because they were being polite to guest of the MGM studio, for the actresses on loan-out from other studios (or producers) like Fontaine?

Boy, that statement sure is prophetic.
I often ask people under 40 if they have ever heard of classic movie stars, those who we thought would be famous forever.

They know Marilyn & Audrey Hepburn from t-shirts, but have no idea they ever acted in movies. You get the blank stare when you name Jean Harlow, Clark Gable or even Charlie Chaplin-despite the Robert Downey biopic (oh that’s an old movie!)

I present the other side of that coin. I don't know the names of the younger "famous" actors, singers, etc. of today.

The Chicago Theater on State Street, which happily still exists today!

It's now used for live performances.
It's conveniently located near a subway stop.

My wife asked me a question and I thought I would pass it on to the "experts." What is the Golden Age of Hollywood?
