Okay, in that case ziggy...

It's revealed at the end that it was all a dream, however the awakened protagonist then witnesses a replay of the beginning as the film ends.

(...this one should be fairly easy to figure out, I'd say)

Come to think of it here skimpole, the film title you offered up would also somewhat fit this scenario, however I was thinking of a different film.

Have another guess in that case?

(...I'll post an additional clue tomorrow)

Next clue:

The director of this film was better known for being the production designer and art director of many Hollywood films than he was a director.

Next:

The adulterous couple were not being targeted for murder but were instead plotting to murder the woman's husband.

That's overly broad, since it applies to both Double Indemnity and The Postman Always Rings Twice (both version of the latter!).

The clue does not apply to either DOUBLE INDEMNITY or THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE.
1. In those movies, there is never a question that the adulterous couple were plotting to kill the woman's husband --- that is part of the story early in .
the movies --- so this is no spoiler.
2. Also, in those movies, the audience is not led to believe that the couple is being targeted for murder. There is no "twist" where we learn that they are actually plotting a murder.

Good guess, KayFrancis, but in IMPACT the adulterers were plotting to kill the woman's husband at the beginning of the movie, but when things go wrong, the wife accuses the husband of plotting to kill her and her lover --- so it's kind of the reverse of the movie that the spoiler is for.

Hint: The movie in question is in color.

Body Heat?

(I don't get what the "were not being targeted for murder" clue refers to in that sentence.)

If Swithin's guess of 'Body Heat' here turns out not to be it, I'll now guess this film to be 1953's 'Inferno'.
