I think the movie is Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service is not the movie.
In that movie James Bond and the Contessa marry before she is killed.
In the movie in question the couple don't marry.
The woman agrees to marry the man, but she is killed minutes later.

Hint: The two main characters are American, but the movie doesn't take place in the US.

It appears that another hint is needed.

Spolier:
The woman accepts the man's marriage proposal, but minutes later she is killed. THE END

First hint: The two main characters are American, but the movie doesn't take place in the US.

Second hint: The movie features an early performance in a small role by someone who would become a major Hollywood star by the end of the decade in which the movie in question was released.

That is not the movie, and the movie in question is not a spy movie.

Another hint:

There were (at least) two other movies adapted from the same source material.
The movie in question was the first.

Not really any closer. I've never seen Five Fingers? Could it be this movie?

No, the movie is not Five Fingers.

That movie was released in the 2000s.

The most recent hint was:
There were (at least) two other movies adapted from the same source material.
The movie in question was the first.

I thought this one would be easy based on the wording of the spolier and then with the hints.

To re-cap:

Third hint: There were (at least) two other movies adapted from the same source material.
The movie in question was the first.

[Other information learned was that movie in question is not a spy movie.]

And now . . .

Fourth hint: The movie set entirely in London except for one sequence in the neighboring English countryside.

I meant 5 Fingers the 50s James Mason movie. It sounds like a murder mystery, but none of the Agatha Christie based movies seem to fit it.

Just to be clear, I have no idea what this movie is, and apparently no one else cares.

So I guess an important clue is that you've used the word "Spolier," which is a French word, perhaps a name? A quick glance might lead someone to believe that the word is "spoiler," but it isn't.
