1. A man finds he is his own murderer, and has been framed for another.
2. We are dealing with an actual murder (the two mentioned in the previous clue).
3/4. The movie was released sometime between 1962 and 1994, when all presidents after LBJ were alive, and most of it takes place between 1946 and 1963, when all the presidents after FDR were alive, with the exception of Obama.
5. The movie is based on a novel.
6. The murders don't involve poison.
7. Most of the movie takes place in two major American cities, neither of which is a state capital.
8. Although the movie takes place in the United States, it was directed by a British citizen.
9. There is a rather alarming sex scene in the movie. Later information makes the scene even more unpleasant.
10. No, it's not Don't Look Now (which doesn't take place in the United States anyway).

And now today

11. Magic is involved.

Finally! Thank you! The climax of the movie is that the private eye learns that the long vanished crooner he is looking for wanted to find a way out from his (the crooner's) deal with the Devil. He realizes that the crooner's plan was to take some random stranger, kill him and eat his heart and absorb his identity. And the private eye learns that the man the crooner killed was himself. He isn't the private eye at all, but the crooner who thinks he is the private eye. He is his own murderer.

Also the director was Englishman Alan Parker. The movie stars Robert De Niro, who had won the best Actor Oscar six years earlier, and Mickey Rourke and Charlotte Rampling, who would both be nominated for lead actors this century, but both lose. The disturbing sex scene involves the New Orleans downpour outside somehow turning into blood inside. Later we learn that this incident was (unknowing) incest.

Had this not been enough, I would have mentioned that a cauldron of gumbo serves as a murder weapon. I might have mentioned that of the six lead actors there are five Americans and an English woman playing an American (Rampling), while of the six lead characters, there are five Americans and one pretending to be an American (De Niro).

Your turn Holden.

OH yeah, 'Angel Heart'. Never saw it, but I do now recall the controversy that surrounded a young Lisa Bonet's part in this film, and something about how Bill Cosby put his two cents in about it at the time.

And so now looking up this film's Wiki page, I found what that was:

"Bill Cosby dismissed Angel Heart as "a movie made by white America that cast a black girl, gave her voodoo things to do and have sex".

(...funny isn't it, but in hindsight you'd think this movie would've been right up his alley, wouldn't ya?!)

I don't get what the clue about all those presidents had to do with anything.

Say, wasn't it in some Louisiana swap very near New Orleans and while in his little canoe, Jimmy Carter countered that "killer rabbit"???

Maybe THAT'S the connection here, Swithin?!

(...just a guess here of course...BUT seein' as how it seems ALL my guesses in this game NEVER are correct, I wouldn't put much stock in this one either)

Next:

The murder was not committed by a psychotic twin, but by the protagonist, who had developed a dissociative identity disorder after the death of the actual twin sibling.

The Other (1972)? Working with vague memories here since I've only seen this movie once and that was back in the 70s.

THE OTHER is not the movie.

The "twins" in the movie in question are adults, not children. Also, the death in the movie in question is not perceived as an accidental as is the case in THE OTHER.

Correct, the movie is Brian De Palma's SISTERS with Margot Kidder as the "twins"

The movie features an early use of split screen by De Palma.
