Coming to a Theatre Near You!

Thanks to the TCM Refugees "Gang of Four" (Jon, Moira, Lynn, and Ptrek) for creating this new forum! There are a couple of threads on Movie Houses that I hope will catch on here.

In this thread, I hope y'all will post news about local movie houses. Special events, series, the restoration (or -- heaven forfend -- the razing) of movie palaces, film festivals, and your latest movie going experiences at these events. It'd be swell to hear about those nights at Hollywood's Egyptian Theatre that featured special guests; or if anyone is attending Robert Osborne's Film Festival in Georgia. If you know of an upcoming rare screening, please let us know.

* A couple of months ago, someone posted on the TCM Board that The Bitter Tea of General Yen was to be screened in Palo Alto. I am so grateful for that posting, as I hightailed it down there and revelled in Frank Capra's moody piece.

Marco,

Don't forget that next Saturday at the Castro, they are honoring Kevin Brownlow (who will be there) and screening one of my favorite Doug, Sr movies "Man in the Iron Mask".

You have no idea how much I wish I could be there with you...but work calls and an afternoon with Rex Bell, Jr should be just as much fun (at least I hope it will be!).

Please let me know how next Saturday goes!

It's darkest before Dwan.

How funny that I should return home to find this message, Lynn. You see, I just got in from picking up my tickets to:

1) An Afternoon with Kevin Brownlow, with a screening of Allan Dwan's The Iron Mask;
2) Cecil B. DeMille: American Epic, the documentary by Kevin Brownlow; and
3) An Evening with Spike Lee

[If Mrs. L is out there, she'll be pleased to know I started the day with a cooking class (on artichokes) before going to the Giants game.]

Dying to see these movies?

Yes, I'll be seeing movies with Kevin Brownlow and Spike Lee live and in person during this year's San Francisco International Film Festival (see above); but Cinespia has announced that those in the Hollywood region can soon see movies alongside their favorite dead classic movie stars!

Beginning in May, the Hollywood Forever Cemetery will be screening classic films such as Vertigo, Harold and Maude, and The Matese Falcon. Macabre? Yes! But now you can say you watched movies while sitting aside Cecil B. DeMille, Jayne Mansfield, Rudolph Valentino, Douglas Fairbanks and many more. Upcoming Stanwyck Tribute

It's not a movie palace but the recently opened Billy Wilder Theater in Westwood (here in Los Angeles) is the new home of the UCLA Film and Television Archive.

Next month and into early June they will be celebrating Barbara Stanwyck's Centennial.

I'll dig out the calendar and post some films and dates as soon as I find it.

I remember it offered some good gems!

I am so jealous. Brownlow is a hero of mine -- I would rather meet him than most celebrities who are far more famous. I would kill to be at that.

Gee Jon, homicide isn't necessary; just get on a plane... Tickets are still available!

Anybody hungry? To encourage "the survival of vintage theaters," Allen Michaan, owner of the Grand Lake Theatre in Oakland, California and the Orinda Theatre in Orinda, California is offering free popcorn Mondays through Thursdays!

Does this mean that it's an urban legend that theatres really make their money at the snack bar rather than through ticket sales?

Whole Granger

Ah shoot! I left New York too soon. I just found out that Farley Granger is appearing at the Film Forum tonight. It would've been great to see this handsome Stranger on a Train discuss his days under contract to Goldwyn and working with Visconti.

If any of the New Yorkers go, I hope they'll post about it!

One that may be coming around is "Becket" with Peter O'Toole and Richard Burton. It played here in Baltimore this past weekend. I didn't get to go but wanted anyone who might be interested to know that it's out there. It has been restored.

OK, thanks to Moraldo for tipping me off about this new forum, because I can post here about the upcoming Barbara Stanwyck centennial at the Brooklyn Academy of Music:

Barbara Stanwyck's fans in the New York area April 25th thru May 6th should check out the Brooklyn Academy of Music's centennial tribute to its fellow Brooklynite. It features rare screenings of pre-codes Baby Face & Ladies They Talk About, as well as Ball of Fire , Meet John Doe, Double Indemnity, The Bitter Tea of General Yen, Remember the Night and Douglas Sirk's All I Desire and There's Always Tomorrow.

Needless to say, I'll be there, especially for Ball of Fire and MJD.

Stanwyck Question and a Moment of Silents

It's great seeing these events happening around the country. Lynn, what's the Salome Jens connection with Barbara Stanwyck and [presumably] Fritz Lang's Clash by Night?

~~~~~~~~~~
I've received preliminary word on this summer's Silent Film Festival (July 13-15, San Francisco). So far we know they'll be showing:
Lubitsch's The Student Prince in Old Heidelberg (1927) with Norma Shearer.
William Wellman's Beggars of Life with Louise Brooks, Richard Arlen and Wallace Beery.
Anthony Asquith's suspenseful A Cottage on Dartmoor (1929).
Cecil B. DeMille's 1929 melodrama The Godless Girl with Marie Prevost and Noah Beery.
There will be at least six more programs, but they haven't been announced yet. Stay tuned.
The UCLA Film and Television Archive is showing the Kim Stanley TV version (which costars Salome Jens) one week, followed by the Stanwyck version the next week so that we can compare the two, I guess.
Also, the TV version is being hosted by the author of "The Female Brando: The Legend of Kim Stanley" and he will do a book signing afterwards.
You should come down so that the West/Left coast contingent would have a reason to go to Musso and Frank's again before the movie!
But would be great to meet you!
