This is what I've been waiting for for two years! The newly restored version of my absolute favorite film will be screened at the end of July at the UCLA Film Archive. I will be there for sure - just have to figure out what day I can make it down to LA.

Oh, Jezebel. I hope that you'll drop by again to post your reactions to seeing this restored version on the big screen. I envy you. I hope Powell, Pressburger, Cardiff and Moira Shearer are somewhere smiling.

Jezzy, I came to the Oasis tonight to ensure that you knew the restored Red Shoes is coming to San Francisco's Castro Theatre this week (Wedneday and Thursday); but then found this thread that you're 9 months ahead of us, having seen it last summer. It's making the rounds now (it was in Seattle a couple of weeks ago); maybe you'll be ready to see it again? I'll be there!

Moraldo – there seems to be an explosion of screenings of the restoration now in the Bay Area. I did fly down to UCLA to see this last year and had a mixed reaction – posted a few comments on the TCM board at that time. It was at The Rafael in San Rafael last month, and I was almost going to go, as I’ve never been to that theatre. In addition to playing at The Castro, it will also be screened at the Pacific Film Archive on Sunday April 4th, as part of a salute to Jack Cardiff series there. Since that is a weekend matinee, it is easier for me to get to, although I do hope it ends up being shown at The Stanford too, eventually. I imagine it will pull in droves of fans up in SF – I’m sure you and Rudyfan will have a great time. Let me know what you think of it – now that others will be seeing it we can compare notes!

Rudy! It's a couple of days later and I'm just returning to this thread; were we sitting near each other without knowing it? Hope you enjoyed it as much as I.

Jezzy, I can't find your post-screening comments. I've run searches (that's actually how I found this thread last week); I'm curious...

I agree, it looked like a sell-out - I was sitting in the second row from the back, next to a bunch of ex-Brooklynites who were saying they had seen it on its first release in NY in 1951. This is my favorite film, and have seen it many times, and TCM has shown it fairly often the past few years, but I had some mixed feelings about this restoration. I did notice a LOT more detail, but found some of the colors too saturated and several scenes too dark. But the change I noticed the most, and was most happy about, was that Lermontov's skin tones were modified. In all the previous versions I've seen, he at times looks like he had a bad make-up job, or was made to look pasty (perhaps intentionally?).
Oh thanks! No wonder I couldn't find it. Well, I revelled in the Castro screening. Though I did notice the jarring make-up at the party where Vicky meets Lermontov; I assumed I juat needed to get used to it (just as those who first saw the restored Sistine Chapel were shocked by the bright colors). I had never noticed before that Lermontov always had a little red "notch" embroidered on all of his suits' left lapels. As for the saturated colors: I loved them, but that's one of the attributes that often thrills me about 1940's Technicolor stock.

I have been to see the newly restored Red Shoes in a cinema in Paris. It's been playing since April. I had seen the film on a big screen some five years ago. But this new HD digital restoration is truly superb. Robert Gitt of the UCLA Film & TV archive has done a marvellous job. I was not always convinced by digital projection before, but for this particular film, it looked vibrant and sharp. I was amazed by the wealth of details that became available, up to the little freckles on Moira Shearer's neck. It was also extremely noticeable that the leading lady (M. Shearer) was endowed with some lovely soft focus, while her male partners were clear and sharp. That kind of treatment for leading ladies is really gone now... In spite of the fact that I had already seen the film quite a number of times, I was still extremely impressed by the performances, particularly that of Anton Walbrook as the egomaniac Lermontov. This film really needs to be seen on a big screen to feel the full impact of the ballet and its emotional content. Really worth catching if the film plays somewhere near you.

Moraldo, the little red notch is a small red ribbon attached to a buttonhole that men wear in France when they hold the 'Légion d'Honneur'. So one might guess that Lermontov has been awarded such a decoration. It just shows how far Powell & Pressburger went in terms of details and accuracy!
