Alexa,

I am now watching "Zoo in Budapest" (1933), a copy recorded off Fox Movie Channel some years ago that a friend shared with me, which is far from perfect (it has many jumps/bumps that affect the film's pacing an continuity and it is rather washed out) and which lasts 83 or 84 minutes. I have read that there is a much better and longer (94 minutes) print in existence (a UCLA or MOMA restoration). Has this print ever been aired by TCM or does TCM plan to show it? I'd love to see a crispier and better print of ZIB, that does justice to Lee Garmes' amazing cinematography.

I believe we have as either part of a Loretta Young or a Gene Raymond night. Again since it is a Fox title we would have had to license it. It also could have been announced and then we had a schedule change....can't quite remember. The title is very familiar....

Thanks.

I am just curious about all of your "brushes with greatness." Can you share some more of those with us?

Also, Linda Weigman, one of my Facebook friends from Austin, Texas, shared that Robert Osborne announced he is going to Paris soon to film a Private Screenings with Olivia De Havilland. Any comments about this? :-)

Sue Sue

Do you mean besides seeing YOU each year at the TCM Film Festival??

I would have to say meeting Bette Davis was wonderful. I got to talk to Paul Newman on the telephone when he was talking about his friend Elizabeth Taylor. I met Taylor twice - both times when she was married to John Warner and she was just great. SO funny - I felt like I could have sat down with her and had a beer and just talked and talked. She was so sweet and yet mischievous.

I worked with Roddy McDowall on a project called PRESERVATION SHOWCASE for TCM in 1997 and he was very quiet until you started asking him about people he loved like Irene Dunne or Jean Harlow. I will never forget he sent me a note when my mother died.

Speaking of Jean Harlow, I mentioned Joe Newman way back sometime yesterday. What a great guy. He rode his bike to MGM every day to work as a teenager, and was on the front desk the day they brought Garbo in. He told me everyone was devastated the day Harlow died. They closed the studio down and Virginia Grey (remember her? She's part of the troup in IDIOT'S DELIGHT that back Gable up-------Beautiful blonde with blue eyes, friend of Lana Turner's and long time amour of Gable) told me that she was called in for a test to see if they should reshoot Saratoga with her taking Harlow's part. You know the rest.

Is that the kind of brush you mean, Sue Sue?

Alexa, thank you for posting all of these great stories and tidbits of information. We're eating it up.

BTW, I am very excited about Mary Astor's SOTM in January. I've been asking the "TCM powers that be" for Astor's and Ronald Colman's inclusion in 2014. That's great news.

I am also excited that Nightmare Alley is finally making an appearance on TCM. Have you been in contact with Coleen Gray in the past? I only wish that the talented Helen Walker had lived long enough to have made more films. She is chilling in the aforementioned film.

Those "brushes" were perfect! And I am always happy to schmooze with the greatest detective TCM ever had who didn't have her own movie!

Ah Countess!!!

there you are sugah. Or as they say in THE WOMEN, "there's baby.."

Nightmare Alley - yes yes yes. and then there's Tyrone Power....Dana who?
Yes Coleen Gray told me that she was too in awe of Joan Blondell to talk to her off camera. Here are my notes of what she said..."I just stood and watched her from a distance." and about Ty, she said, he "would walk on the set dressed in the tuxedo for the mentalist...and there was something about him...as if his feet did not touch the floor." HOTCHA

Helen Walker - chilling is a great description. You know I researched her for Robert and there was all that stuff about her driving with some GI's and a bad wreck. I don't know if we will ever know what really happened. Anyway one of those unforgettable performances.

I also met Mike Mazurki. What a sweetheart.
And don't forget we are showing LAURA for the first time coming up - not only on the new season of the ESSENTIALS but -----here's some SCOOP. It is one of future co-host Mother Dolores Hart's picks. so TWO huge Fox titles.

Thank you Countess "l'amour, l'amour...."

Alexa,

:o Thank you much for addressing my questions. It's possible that you may have run THE DOCKS OF NEW YORK before I had TCM, but since May 1st, of 1999. I have not seen it on the schedule. And it came out on DVD only a couple 3 years ago from Criterion. You might have also shown Lubitsch THE MARRIAGE CIRCLE at some point? Long while ago though. Would definitely be new to many viewers. As would another EL Silent SO THIS IS PARIS? which was shown on the French version of TCM in a beautiful new print a couple Summer's ago.

:) I agree that I prefer the Silent Garbo. At times, I find Greta's sound persona rather off-putting. Speaking of which, any chance we could see the Silent 1923 version of ANNA CHRISTIE sometime with Blanche Sweet? Might be an interesting comparison to Garbo's first Talkie? Eugene O'Neil felt that the 1923 film was more true to his original story then the later adaption. That seems odd coming from a playwright, but he was very found of the original Silent.

:D Wonderful to hear as well that you are a great fan of THE BIG PARADE. Cool that you got to meet Jack's daughter, and share a screening with her. As you have now shown a restored WINGS, WHAT PRICE GLORY? and at last THE BIG PARADE, hopefully we will yet see debut's of THE PATENT LEATHER KID and LILAC TIME at some point as well. I continue to be befuddled at the lack of interest in LILAC TIME since it was such a pivotal film in establishing Gary Cooper a major Star. Again, anything with Colleen Moore. Meantime, Richard Barthelmess received a Best Actor Academy Award Nomination for PLK. The Road Show version was restored either by LOC of George Eastman House in 35 Millimeter a few years back.

:? Apart from METROPOLIS, what about Frizt Lang's DIE NIBELUNGEN (1923) which came out on Blu-ray last year. Maybe shown in two parts SIEGFRIED, and KRIEMHELD'S REVENGE due to the length of the epic? One of the famous films that I neglected to mention in the previous post is Douglas Fairbanks THE BLACK PIRATE (1926). As it is one of only four all Two-Color Technicolor films that survive from the Silent Era, kind of surprising this is never broadcast? It was released on Blu-ray by Kino a few years ago. Also a rare chance to see Billie Dove, since few of her Silent films have been restored. Let alone see her in color. Incidentally, I would love to see a month of Pickford and Fairbanks, or to have one of them honored during Summer Under The Stars next year.

:| Another Silent/Goat-land that was recently released on Blu-Ray is Paul Fejo's stylistic LONESOME (1928). With TCM having such a strong working deal with Universal, I kind of expected to see this picture. Paul Deni's THE MAN WHO LAUGHS (1928) with Conrad Videt and Mary Philbin, gets references in the What A Character Veidt profile, but is seemingly never shown.

 Speaking of Fox titles, I did notice that you will be airing John Ford's long lost UPSTREAM (1927) in November. Arte TV in France also ran a restored version of Rauol Walsh THE RED DANCE with Dolores Del Rio and Charles Farrell last year. I may or may not have mentioned this to Chuck Tabesh several months ago. Haven't talked to him in a long time.

I have a tendency to just ramble on, so I better cut this short and let others get in there comments. Hope you enjoyed your weekend here. Again, we greatly appreciate everything that you do. TCM is the greatest!

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for loving and appreciating Silents.
All great suggestions and I agree with you on Garbo (sorry Camille fans - Robert and I disagree on this one - he adores Camille).

We love Criterion and do quite a bit of work with them and Janus.

Robert loves Richard Barthelmess I know. And my first fan letter was to Mary Pickford in the 1960's after I saw MY BEST GIRL. (she never answered. ((((((( )

Sue Sue-

here is more where that came from:
Matthew Broderick will be doing a month long tribute to my favorite genre, Screwball comedy in December.

Lots of surprises coming up for our 20th anniversary. Those will be announced in the coming months.

Mrs O,

That is a great scoop about Mother Dolores Hart being a co-host. Thanks for giving us the heads up!

You mentioned that you spoke to Paul Newman on the phone, about an Elizabeth Taylor piece, sometime before he passed away. I guess that brings to mind the question of Joanne Woodward and what she is doing these days. Have you heard or even had direct contact yourself? I think we'd all love to see her do a private screening, audio or a live appearance at the Festival. She must have some great stories to share.
