Snubs!!!

Thelma Ritter definitely should have been nominated for Rear Window! She had the very last line inthe film! for goodness sakes. Monty Clift and Lee Remick should have both been nominated for Wild River.

The score from The Boys From Brazil is amazing. I love Bernard Hermann. The score from The Ghost and Mrs. Muir is a total delight.

and as you and Sue sue well know, with The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, there was no 20th Century-Fox fanfare over the logo at the beginning of that movie, because Zanuck loved the score so much......

Dear Sue Sue; I love listening to compilations. Years ago Charles Gerhardt and the National Philharmonic Orchestra with the help of producer George Korngold (Eric's son) recorded a series of themes and incidental music of most of the great composers of classic scores. They have all been lovingly re-mastered and are so great because you get a sense of the amazing versatility of these artists. There is also a comiplation of themes from composers at 20th Century Fox , Paramount and MGM that I'm really fond of as well. Most are from the 40's -50's & 60's.
Favorite Character Actors: Michael Rennie, Richard Haydn, Jack Carson, Walter Brennan, Edmund Gwen. Clifton Webb, Claude Rains, Leonid Kazinsky, Basil Rathbone, Akim Tamiroff, Lynne Overman, Peter Lorre, Conrad Veidt, Zachary Scott and wonderful, enormous Sydney Greenstreet.
Favorite Character Actresses: Eve Arden, Gale Sondergaard, Marjorie rambeau, Mary Astor, Jane Darwell, Lucile Watson, Mary Boland, Edna May Oliver, Jessie Ralph, Thelma Ritter, Mary nash, Florence Bates, Agnes Moorehead, janice carter, Rita Johnson, Doris Dowling, Hazel brooks, Judith Anderson, Hope Emerson and brassy & sassy Iris Adrian. God, imagine a movie with all of 'em?

Steve Hayes is back in the house tonight for more questions. Please feel free to chime in if you have a question.

Steve, I enjoy seeing adaptations of plays into films. Are there any plays made into films that you think adapted well to the medium? Any films that you feel which would have been better off remaining on the stage?

Dear Sue Sue;
I think most of the Tennessee Williams plays have been pretty good when they were adapted to the screen, although because many of them had homosexual undertones, they had to try get around that as best they could, often with varying degress of results. "Glass Menagerie" is not good because Gertrude Lawrence was miscast and too demonstrative as Amanda. Granted, she was fighting the ghost of recently deceased Laurette Taylor who's unforgettable performance had stamped the role of all time. Taylor played Amanda as a Steele butterfly and Lawrence just didn't have it in her. Also, Irving Rapper wasn't director enough to pull the whole thing together and make it look like the sentimental masterpiece it was on the stage. "Streetcar is brilliant. period. It's all Kazan though. His mark on developing Williams' plays can never be underestimated.He made Williams re-examine, re-write and re-structure his plays until they were solid. He should have directed tall the screen versions, but he and Williams were continually falling out and their respective egos got in their way. "cat" is okay. But Brooks opens it up and doesn't pull it together enough to make it cohesive. It's up to Newman and Taylor to create the magnatism needed and they do their jobs admirably assisted by Burl Ives re-creation of bombstic Big Daddy...which won him an Oscar for "The Big Country"...don't ask... Suddenly Last Summer is an infinitely better movie than a play. The homosexual thing is so pussy footed around, you wanna scream; "Alright, Sebastian was an old queen who used his mother to pimp and get tricks for him!" However, I don't think anyone ever got and spoke the poetry in Wiliams prose like Katherine Hepburn and Vivien Leigh.And I like Mankiewicz's direction alot. "Summer and Smke" and "Suddemly Last Summer" are both aided by capturing the stage perforamances of Geraldine Page. The former is a better film, but I like the trashiness of the latter better. "Night Of The Iguana" and "The Fugitive Kind" have moments, great actors, but aren't that engaging in the end. Other plays into films that work or don't: "Come Back Little Sheba" is a tawdry melodrama except for Shirley Booth, "Picnic" opens up and is a better movie than a play. "The Bad Seed" is fun but too stagebound. "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf" is magnificent, because the censors were being ignored and Mike Nichols brought out the best in all concerned. Recently; Nichols "Angels In America" was satggering on every level and John Patrick Shanley's "Doubt" was perfection.

Dear Mrs O- I don't think that married actress/director collaborations work, primarily because, Hollywood being what it is, everyone "fools" around too much with everyone else. This seldom leads to a stable atmosphere on the set or at home for that matter. DeToth and Litvak were both notorious womanizers and slept with everyone. Lake was Bi-polar and Hopkins manic, so you can imagine what those sets and households were like. Gloria Grahame, while acting for her husband director Nick Ray and taking care of their newborn, was sleeping with Ray's thirteen year old son from a previous marriage, whom she later married ten years later. Nice. Minnelli got good work from Garland, but eventiually couldn't control her. Margaret Sullivan drove hubby William Wyler and everyman she married for that matter completely crazy. John Huston made Evelyn Keyes insecure and nuts. In short, the egos are simply too big to make for a healthy working or family relationship.
