Dave Kehr has an interesting piece in The New York Times found here on Dorothy Mackaill and what he describes as "A Short Career in Lurid Hollywood."

Miss Mackaill wearing a banana skirt (did she borrow it from Josephine Baker?) in His Captive Woman (1929).

Interesting. Thanks for posting.

Mackaill's The Flirting Widow is pretty good and shows up on TCM now and then. Still waiting to see The Barker.

I don't consider her voice to be raspy. Odd comment.

I like her brushed velvet voice, myself too! I would like to see any Dorothy Mackaill films that still exist. She seems quite modern in a way that her contemporaries do not always share.

I've got many of her talkies from TCM and a few silents like Shore Leave and Ranson's Folly, both with Richard Barthelmess.

Hey, Cine, sorry to be OT, but what is up with the new avatar? A new and elegant fixture within the hallowed halls of Chez Cinemaven?

Ha! Ha! Well...first of all, the halls of my maison are hardly halllowed. And second of all, that picture was taken by the boy who took me to the prom about 120 years ago; he is a photographer. It reminded me of film noir.
