THE THIRD MAN...

Post by Sue Sue Applegate »

Just watched the intro for The Third Man with Robert Osborne and Drew Barrymore discussing the virtues of this film. Mr. O loved it, but Drew had difficulty with the chemistry between Joseph Cotten (Holly Martins) and Alida Valli (Anna Schmidt). She did mention several times the importance of the "Dutch" angle that creates a sense of confusion and deceit throughout the unfolding of the plot against post-World War II Vienna, and it's obvious she does do her homework, and manages to synthesize it with her own personal opinion about a film.

The score, by Anton Karas on the zither, was also mentioned as "ubiquitous" by Drew, and I am glad such an iconic piece of music is still regarded as worthy of merit. I can remember the first time I learned how to play it on the piano, and looked forward to when I could actually see the film, as the soundtrack was so popular in the fifties, and early sixties.

Time to enjoy the film!

Sue Sue, I didn't see this thread when you started it, but I am a big fan of Carol Reed and especially The Third Man.

SPOILERS

Cotten portrays a fool, and Welles character is the more likable man, which is so refreshing when we are expecting straight heroes and villains. Cotten and Valli's relationship is stood on it's ear. We want, even expect them to end up together, and it's kind of hilarious that they don't. I wonder if Drew was just expressing a frustration with the movie for not meeting those romantic expectations? It amazes me when certain films fall flat with someone. I can't imagine not being blown away by this film.
