Sat. 12 April 7:50 am
Ita crossed the coast at Cape Slattery at about 11;00pm last night as a Category 4 Cyclone with winds up to 270kph. It has weakened to a cat 2 cyclone. It is presently over Cooktown, 200km north of Cairns. Cooktown is a very old town with many pre 1985 buildings. Extensive damage is expected. (New building regulations introduced in 1985 required buildings to be strengthened to better withstand cyclones). Port Douglas, 80km north is already feeling gale force wind.
The present forecast is for Ita to pass about 60km to the west of Cairns at about 7:00 pm today. Heavy rain is falling at the moment, but the wind has not yet arrived. Hopefully the wind will only be gale force by the time it reaches us.

The link I posted previously is dynamic and is being updated hourly.

All is well, the storm has passed with no problems for me. As expected Cooktown copped the most damage. The highway into Cairns is cut by floodwater to the north and south, but that should clear by tonight. The storm passed in the night, I was asleep and did not even notice it.

In western Kentucky, it's been raining for two days. The forecast is for several more. Poor Sugar is spending a lot of time under the couch!

But no twisters in your neck of Kentucky, I hope? We had a lovely Spring day--cool but sunny and have had daffodils bursting forth in the last week. Still not too many sprouts on the trees, but people have started sneezing, so I guess the pollen is a good sign. We are expecting the rain you are experiencing for the next three days.

In Seattle, we are expecting a mini heatwave 80 degrees today and 84-86 degrees tomorrow - could break records in our area ... right now I'm having the fan on to keep 8) .

I'll be swimming to my car later. Flash flood warnings all around. A friend of mine works at a store at the Annapolis docks and they are already almost flooded.
