Jefferson Airplane Takes Off Aug 1966
The group's debut album and a good one, capturing the folk-rock sound of the time. It only went to #128 on the charts.
The opening track "Blues From An Airplane" has some good bass from Jack Casady and we get the first hearing of Marty Balin's unique, high pitched voice. Rhythm guitarist Paul Kantner sings an OK song "Let Me In" though his voice is pretty ordinary. Much better is the catchy rocker "Bringing Me Down" with some good work from lead guitarist Jorma Kaukonen. "It's No Secret" is a good Byrds-like number with jangling guitar and nice harmonies. Next is a good version of the rock classic "Tobacco Road" with great emotional singing from Marty.
Side 2 starts with a good pop song "Come Up The Years" with more harmonies and a glockenspiel. "Run Around" is a forgettable one. A nice version of the folk song "Let's Get Together" is next, we hear female singer Signe Toly Anderson on one line, this song would be a top ten hit in 1969 for the Youngbloods. "Don't Slip Away" is a good song which plays with volume on one part. "Chauffer Blues" is sung by Anderson alone, she has a good strong voice. The last song is a bluesy one well sung by Marty, "And I Like It"

Thank you for identifying the chime-y yield of "Come Up The Years", Detective Jim McLeod.Detective Jim McLeod wrote: ↑August 22nd, 2024, 12:35 pm

Surrealistic Pillow by Jefferson Airplane-Feb 1967
The group's second album and one of my favorites of the 1960s. It climbed to #3 on the charts.
The opener "She Has Funny Cars" has a good drum intro by new member Spencer Dryden, Jack Casady supplies a fuzz bass on this. The next song, "Somebody To Love" showcases the new female singer, Grace Slick, who has an even more powerful voice than her predecessor. The song is a great rocker that became a top 10 hit. The next track is "My Best Friend" a catchy song with good guitar by Jorma Kaukonen and some nice vocal harmonies. "Today" is a hauntingly beautiful ballad well sung by Marty Balin and some good tambourine. 'Comin' Back To Me" is another hypnotic and beautiful ballad with just guitar, a recorder played by Grace and delicate singing from Marty.
Side 2 opens with a jaunty rocker "3/5 Of A Mile In 10 Seconds" with interesting lyrics. D.C.B.A -25 is good folk rocker with Byrds-like harmonies. "How Do You Feel" gives off some fun hippie vibes with more recorder from Grace. "Embryonic Journey" is a short instrumental with acoustic finger picking by Jorma. Grace's next solo is the psychedelic trip into Alice In Wonderland- "White Rabbit", it became another top 10 hit. The closer is more psychedelia with Marty singing lead on 'Plastic Fantastic Lover"
