Re: SPORTS
Still say the best way to handle the home plate ump situation and considering that a manager can presently be tossed out of the game for arguing balls and strikes, is to give each manager two or maybe three additional replay calls in each game that can be used to question by use of the digital strike zone the call made by the umpire. This way the home plate ump's traditional role would continue on, and with only those two or three replays given the managers, this not slowing down the game to any great degree, and with also the idea that the managers would have to decide when to use them and most likely during what they would have to perceive as being a critical juncture of the game.
(...and HEY, laffite...how about what that big Japanese wunderkind that team you hate has on their roster now days and what he did last night?!...couldn't have scripted how he reached the 40-40 mark any better, wouldn't ya say?...and just in case you don't know, Ohtani stole his 40th base, and then won the game in the bottom of the 9th with two outs by hitting a walk-off grand slam)

Re: SPORTS
I thought of that, Dargo, but it does not make me happy. I had thought one challenge for each time during the last two innings. But it's happening all through the game! What, but if they would just disappear that wretched oblong rectangle so that our eyes will not set upon it. For me, it's not a good thing to be confronted with the discrepancy over and over again during the game. It diminishes the watching experience. ///

Once again I am furious.
Today (Saturday) all the San Francisco TV channels have sports instead of news.
One has 30 minutes at 6 PM. Then nothing until 8 PM.
This would apply to anyone who uses an antenna as it is College Football on 4 networks.
Did I mention I'm furious?!

Are you sayin' you'd rather watch the NEWS than Sports here???
Well, if you're not pullin' our legs here, sorry, but I gotta say I don't understand this sentiment at all, and I'll tell ya why.
In Sports, one never knows what the outcome will be before the game begins, right?!
BUT in the News, you pretty much know IT'S gonna begin AND end with stories about people getting shot, the death and destruction in the war zones of the world and upon our nation's roadways, politicians saying some of THE stupidest things imaginable (especially this year during the election cycle) AND reports of people generally doing and yes saying some of THE craziest and stupidest things all well, RIGHT?!
So then, what's your draw to the News here, ol' buddy?
(...what, you like bein' reminded of how screwed up the human race is and then bein' depressed all the time or somethin'???)

Some will call them Public Airwaves.
I don't care for sports. That isn't the point.
I have a right to newscasts without having to switch to the Internet.
With sports it's about the money it makes.
Every broadcast network removed news for sports yesterday evening.
Living in California means Primetime is at 5 PM, just like with TCM.
Sports are on TV all day long on the weekends.
I'm okay when it does not interfere with the news.
My Mom is 90 years old. Don't argue with her.
Here in the SF area, there are 2 Fox channels and 2 CBS channels.
Both removed news for sports.
It isn't about what I want but what I deserve.

I have cable and about a year ago, I changed to a tier where I could retain 15 channels (out of 200) and still have TCM and other channels.
Right off the bat, I removed ALL the sports channels and then Fox and similar. All the ones trying to sell things, home improvements (which are now about dumb people remodeling or purchasing houses), children's, and others. Interestingly all the local channels and PBS remained. This included all the other channels they broadcast.
Still have a lot of channels and some I never watch.
I did go and visit with a disabled veteran friend yesterday while his wife took care of errands. Die hard Clemson fan so we had to watch the game. Fortunately, Georgia kicked their butts. First football game I have watched in forever.
But, this is America and the corporations run the country and TV is corporations looking to make money.
I remember as a kid, you had about two months of football games (all professional) on TV, then 2-3 months of professional basketball and then about 3 months of professional baseball. Usually on only one or two of the networks, so I would watch old movies.
That was about the time that local news was 5 minutes of news, 4 of weather and 3 of sports and then national came in for 13 minutes.
Oh, and the news is not always the same and they do report on important things affecting people locally. While they do tend to lend with murders, robbery, auto accidents and so forth, they do get around to reporting on more important things, especially what local governments and corporations may be up to. Not to mention what state government is up to. Then there are the local weather reports.

Re: SPORTS
I am forced to keep the 125 channel tier, the middle level, or give up TCM with Xfinity/Comcast.
We are not going to save money by giving up TCM.
The sports yesterday was on broadcast television, the channels starting with K.
We have no local news without broadcast television.
The sports were all nationwide broadcasts.
Around here we have 2 channels for the Giants/A's, Warriors and Sharks.
49ers and Raiders are on broadcast television.
If I had streaming TV instead, same channels starting with K.
I have to pay for TV or blow up a mountain range for an antenna.
I do believe Antenna Television should be regulated.
You're right though, the sports giants will prevail.
Money, Money, Money!

Almost without exception (with the PBS News Hour perhaps being the lone exception here...you know, that News source almost everyone right of center in this country believes to be "too liberal") EVERY News source now days' bottom line IS "making money". Yep, the days of CBS President Bill Paley running his News division and allowing it to lose money are long gone.
"And THAT'S the way it..ahem..was!"
Re: SPORTS
My point would have to be PBS is not local news.
My 90 year old Mama is something of a news hound.
I realize TV news stinks and repeats every 30 minutes regardless of the time of day.
Next day too and then some.
I love Christiane Amanpour but Mama doesn't.
I need to get my Internet gateway updated so I can kick cable to the curb.
Good old Jimimac71 is mobility impaired but that's my problem.
I could access news from any major network with streaming.
So talk to me Dargo, Sports or TCM?

Re: SPORTS
Okay, and now back to Sports. (...the Weather will be coming up at 20 past the hour)
Thursday while at my usual post-tennis match watering hole in Cottonwood AZ, Jose who's one of the servers there and who is a big Dodger fan, told me he thought the Dodgers would sweep the D-backs during their four game series down in Phoenix, OR at the very least would take three of the four games down there, anyway. He also said he was going to Sunday's game down in Chase Field.
Now, thinking of how well the D-Backs have been playing lately, I told Jose I thought they'd most likely split the series, two game each. And so, while I hate betting against "my" Dodgers, we ended up placing a small wager on this series' outcome.
At present (this being Sunday Sept 1st, 17:30 hours AZ time) I still have a chance to win that bet, as the first two games were real cliffhangers that the Boys in Blue pull out close wins in during the final endings. Today though, the D-backs murdered the Dodgers down there 14-3. I'm sure Jose wasn't thrilled about being there to witness it.
(...and so, I guess we'll see tomorrow whose hand will get a nice crisp ten-spot slapped into it when I'm back at the Tavern Grill after my tennis matches this coming Tuesday)

Re: SPORTS
Tough question to answer here, jimimac.
Although, I might have to lean toward Sports here, but only because I've probably already watched almost every movie TCM shows at a minimum of two or three times, BUT with every sporting event...
(...well, it's like I said earlier here about never knowing the ultimate outcome of games until they're over)
Re: SPORTS
My late stepdad and I loved girls beach volleyball.
Okay anything with the ladies.
Mom is watching The Glen Miller Story on our favorite channel (TCM).
Ain't no sports worth watching by comparison.
I will add Sports and Music MUST continue in education at every level.

The long lost TCM board member DownGoesFrazier has come to mind after seeing your last post here, jimimac.
Don't know if you remember him, but boy did he hate the actress shown playing Glenn Miller's wife there.
And so I'd venture to say IF he were still with us, he would've vehemently disagreed with your take on all that.
(...and yep, not just because the name he chose to use back then was sports-oriented)

Remember this from Jimmy and June?
Her voice was gritty and it wasn't her fault.
For me, this and any other classic sports movie is better than the real thing.
Still drying my eyes from The Glen Miller Story.
