Have interviewed several people who have worked with or knew Sterling Hayden and they all say he was pretty much exactly the same off-screen as he appeared on. A stolid man of few words.

Love Sterling`s famous statement that he was an actor who started at the top and worked his way down -- though I for one would heartily disagree. He is one of my all-time faves and every picture in which he appeared benefited from his performance. Personal favorites: SUDDENLY, THE ASPHALT JUNGLE, THE KILLING . . . oh heck, they`re all great.

Wow -- just posted and up pops the odd couple: Bogie and Dagwood. Only on SSO.

BTW: That Arthur Lake avatar bears a striking resemblance to a young Wally Ford IMO. Now that would have been interesting Dagwood casting.

I can't remember which of the many books I've read about Chaplin told the story of Chaplin being shocked at how Marion had aged over the years, them being very close back in the 20s, I'd guessed she was somewhat of a hermit but to me she still looked splendid. Apart from what Chaplin said about Marion's ageing I don't think anyone else had a bad word to say about her. It's lovely to see her here Joe.

Dear Alison,

You're very correct in saying nobody ever said a bad word about Marion Davies. She was the kindest woman imaginable. I loved her dearly and when she died, I too nearly expired. If it wasn't for George Chakiris taking me to the hospital with sunstroke, I would have expired on Malibu Beach. He lived next door and found me passed out.

Marions appearance may be because of cortizone, which she took due to cancer. She also imbibed 'a bit!!'...... That doesn't help one's appearance either....

Larry
