It's a wonder with all the cigarettes and night clubs (in George's case) and drinking and carousing in other cases that some managed to live so long. I remember reading that Charles Boyer was a 60 a day man, yet he died in 1978 aged 79. And others perished early from the very same things. What a lottery is life.

But of course Charles Boyer was a suicide. One wonders what age he would have reached had he not taken his own life.

Guys like Bogart, Gable and Flynn died comparatively young because of their lifestyle. A case could also be made for Tyrone Power and Gary Cooper. Smoking seemed to be the usual culprit.

Also Conrad Veidt. Died of a heart attack at age 50, while playing golf. He was a very heavy smoker.

Hey, Stone, you must be in your glory today as George Raft rolls on TCM all day long.
I'm watching "Manpower" right now as it is one of my favorites. Looking forward to "Johnny Angel".

You bet, Joe. even though I've seen all of the films TCM is showing, cannot resist a day devoted to George. Only wish they'd included SCARFACE and INVISIBLE STRIPES. Great headshot of m'man George. Haven't seen that photo before.

Two other smoking casualties: Dick Powell and Robert Taylor.

I thought Dick Powell was a victim of "The Conqueror" curse. :(

A Happy Birthday to Veda Ann Borg. I always find her so entertaining in everything she does. Another one of those
unsung ladies.

Guess the jury's still out on that one, pvitari. But both Duke and Dick were also notoriously heavy cigarette smokers -- which reminds me of yet another tar bar casualty: velvet-voiced Nat King Cole.
