But Happy Birthday to three great Western actors: Mr. Scott, Mr. Steele and my favorite slimy villain (yet apparently a great guy and devoted family man in real life) the incomparable Mr. Duryea.

Hi Joe,
That is an unfortunate picture of Mariane DuPont... She looks mad at having her picture taken; she wasn't that bad looking when I knew her ( and I was a good friend of hers).. She was always part of the 'horsey set' and owned thoroughbreds in Britain and USA...
I became interested in thoroughbreds because of her and still attend the races at Stampede Park in Calgary, where I still mainain a box.
She was an attractive older woman with white hair in the late 50's and 60's when I knew her; she was part of the super rich DuPont family and she was a good friend of my grandmother..
Also, I was very surprised to see Olga Baclanova billed as just "Baclanova" on that poster.
She also was a friend of Nell's and they spoke Russian together always (I never knew what they were talking about) and shared many jokes in Russian.
She lived in NYC in the 50's and London too and then retired in Switzerland and was a friend of Charlie Chaplin there (she would have known him in the silents!)...
I last saw her with Paulette Goddard and Erich Remarque in Vevey, Switzerland in 1960.
She still looked good.

Re: *CANDIDS*
Good point, Larry. How many of us have had our picture taken at inopportune moments when we either don't look our best or just get caught with that awkward or unflattering expression on our face?
The photographers who supply pictures for supermarket tabloids make a career out of capturing such moments.

Hi Western Guy,
Yes, you're right 100%...
I don't think she was a "picture person", if you get my drift.
She did pose with her winning horses but I think she thought the 'event' was the horses spotlight!!!
I do have a picture of her smiling and as a mature (white haired) lady and dressed with pearls...
A true lady of the "upper clawsss" - & nice person.
Never knew Randolph Scott or his other wife... Pity - I've heard they were nice, gracious people too...

Larry, as usual your input regarding the upper crust was interesting. Perhaps I shouldn't jump the gun so fast, since she turned out to be a nice woman. Sorry bout that.

I jumped the gun too, Joe, in thinking that the old adage "Love is blind" must be true. Thanks to Larry and Stone for reminding me that I'm not always camera-ready eithermongoII wrote:Larry, as usual your input regarding the upper crust was interesting. Great stuff, Susan. We need more Western fans. It's a genre in desperate need of revitalizing. Especially with the box office dud THE LONE RANGER remake proved to be.
