Re: What are you listening to?
I heard this in the car on the radio recently. It's being passed off as the last song of the Beatles and was just released this month. It seems John Lennon did a demo recoding of it in the 70s, and all these years later, they put it together with some help from digital editing and splicing. It is a melancholy song, but very haunting.....

What an amazing voice Bobby Hatfield of The Righteous Brothers possessed and singing such a beautiful song (LIVE) here (and with just the perfect amount of "coloratura" in his voice) in order to showcase it...

I just noticed that TCM is showing I Love You Alice B. Toklas in the wee hours tomorrow morning. That reminded me, of course, of Gertrude Stein, whom I've been fascinated with since the age of about 14.
Gertrude Stein's favorite song was "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine." Here's an early version of the song. (It was later sung by Laurel and Hardy in Way Out West.)

Re: What are you listening to?
The "Pine" reminded me of this song, which was originally recorded live at a club in D.C. but the sound was so clean that it was able to be reimagined in this beautiful setting. It was her parent's favorite song and they were in the audience when she sang it live. I love how it contrasts the young girl who felt comforted by the trees and the older woman, still walking there alone but now feeling their more ominous presence.
"When Fortuna spins you downward, go out to a movie and get more out of life."...Ignatious J. Reilly, A Confederacy of Dunces.

Thanks IL Melvin.
I'm always delighted when someone knows Eva Cassidy.

This is both hilarious and beautiful, spoofing Death Metal and Soul with skill and deference.

Another sad story of a very special artist leaving us too soon. She is fantastic.

Favorite songs for October and November: "October Winds" (aka The Castle of Dromore"); and "A Tune for November." The October song is used very effectively throughout John Ford's great film, The Last Hurrah, particularly at the very end.

Re: What are you listening to?
I do the same thing, I segue from "End of Summer" to "Autumn" to "Thanksgiving"... usually including mixes of albums I post...
