I haven't seen "A Nous La Liberte" in 28 years. But it was a lot of fun. I know there is controversy over whether Chaplin stole some of it for "Modern Times," but I think the French film borrowed the friendly, drunken millionaire idea from "City Lights."

I think Rene Clair was very flattered that Chaplin borrowed the idea, adjusted it and made it his own. To view both films the look of the factories are very similar.

Oh, the connections are huge, frequent and obvious. But Rene Clair stole from Chaplin who then stole back. It's what the public domain is for.
