Studs Turkel, who was an oral historian, raconteur, disc jockey, guerrilla journalist and a reason to believe in humanity, has died at age 96 in his home in Chicago. From Division Street in the '60s to Hard Times to Working to The Good War and one more upcoming book to be published next month, he was a prodigious author and chronicler of the music of life. I trust that Studs, (reunited with his beloved Ida and a few million friends), is enjoying interviewing the heavenly hosts this morning...and isn't too bored in paradise, though if there's someone ready to point out any injustices there, he's the man.
NPR had a splendid tribute to Studs on their morning news program, Saturday Weekend Edition. It can be heard here beginning at noon today.
