I believe you're referring to "Marianne", the allegorical figure of France. Statues of her are found all over France, including high above Paris' Place de la République. She's featured in Delacroix' famous painting, La Liberté guidant le peuple (trust me, you'd all recognize it). For decades she had anonymous features, but in the 1960's Bardot's features were being used. In the mid-1980's Bardot was replaced by Deneuve. She's since been replaced by a number of other jolies jeunes filles; most recently by Évelyne Thomas (a talk show host).Garbomaniac wrote:I agree. At one time she was considered the most beautiful woman in the world. I read an article once that all of the statues in France, which had all been redone with the face of Brigitte Bardot, were replaced with the face of Deneurve! I wish I knew where I read that. It seems each town in France has a statue in the square representing the country. It might have started out as Joan of Arch, but with Bardot's popularity, they were all replaced with her face. Then, Deneurve came along.
