Favorite Musical Poll FINAL: #1 & #2
Favorite Musical Poll FINAL: #1 & #2
So I has come to this. This is for all the marbles (strike that, I mean warbles). The Favorite Musical in this, all known, unknown and parallel Universes.
In this corner, timing in at 103 minutes, the #1 Seed: Singin' in the Rain (Kelly/Donen, 1952)
And in this corner, timing in at 113 minutes, the #2 Seed: Meet Me in St. Louis (Minnelli, 1944)
The polls close at 11:59pm CST on The Ides of March, Monday, March 15, so no dawdling now.
And may the Favorite Musical win.

Singin' in the Rain has the dancing that St. Louis lacks. Yet Meet Me in St. Louis has a darker dimension that is mighty satisfying. This is Cyd Charisse v. Hallowe'en and Christmas (with the beautifully ironic "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas". I'll have to come back...

Arg...a true musical versus a comedy-drama with songs. "All I Do Is Dream of You" versus "Under the Bamboo Tree". Cyd versus Judy. Gene Kelly. The incomparable Margaret O'Brien.
"Singin' in the Rain". The pain...the pain...

Patful voted AGAINST a Margaret O'Brien movie! What is happening!!!
Amazingly, my vote is FOR the O'bRien picture, Meet Me in St Louis.
But Gigi is still my all time favorite.

I just watched MMISL(L) 2 days ago and was again enchanted with the movie. The rich colors, the singing, the mysterious lady in blue, "The Boy Next Door". sigh....
The thing is, this poll is supposed to be about Musicals, and to my mind, a Musical has singing and dancing...and Singin' in the Rain has it all. AND..it is raining today. Must be a sign.
Singin' in the Rain. that hurt.

Agony, that's what it is.
There is so much to be said for both of these great musicals. But for me it comes down to Garland vs. Kelly, and it's a no-brainer.
