*CANDIDS*
Re: *CANDIDS*
I wouldn't say no to any of them, but if I had to pick a winner, I'd go with Gable. There's just something approachable, open, easygoing and appealing about him. Onscreen, he's always a man comfortable in his own skin (oh, that skin). You want to trust him, and if he lets you down, you want to forgive him. That's a man who's successful with women -- if he can't get you with raw sex appeal, he'll get you to mother him. [Sigh]

Thanks for the image of Power, Pvitari.
Moira, good to see you on the boards. I guess if anyone could get you going, It's the one and only Clark Gable.
If my mother was still here, she would choose Robert Taylor...hands down.

Cut to 1938. Jackie Cooper is 17, and full of energy. His mother is a friend of Joan Crawford's and she passes the word to Jackie that he'd be welcome to go over to her house and play badminton.
One day, after they'd played, Joan caught Jackie looking down her dress. "You're growing up," she said. He made some crude 17-year-old pass at her.
So, for six months or so, the kid went over to the stars house to play 'badminton'. "She was a very erudite professor of love," he would write later, after her death. "She was a wild woman. She would bathe me, powder me, cologne me.
She would put on high heels, a garter belt, and a large hat and pose in front of the mirror, turning this way and that way. 'Look,' she would say. I was already looking. But that sort of thing didn't particularly excite me. I kept thinking: The lady is crazy."

Re: *CANDIDS*
I don't think that's the best picture I've ever seen of Dean Martin.
In my early twenties I'd have no trouble chosing, it would have been Marlon no contest. Nowadays it's Clark all the way, although Robert Taylor looks mighty cute.

That Dobie looks so much like my "Baby", lost her in 2005, and still miss her on a daily basis. Wonderful, sweet, gentle, but didn't like men in baseball caps. Rescued her as a one year old, had her till she was 14.

I never cease to marvel at Jackie Cooper, whose face remains unchanged. Generally, our faces change many times as we age, and take on a somewhat different character in adulthood than they had when we were children, but not Cooper's. He has kept that same face all his life, and yet his adult face, although perhaps boyish, is certainly not a child's face. Very interesting.

I would say the same is true of Charles Laughton. Here he is at age twelve:jdb1 wrote:I never cease to marvel at Jackie Cooper, whose face remains unchanged. And Mongo, I've noticed that the photo you've posted for Wesley Addy's birthday is from Hush. . .Hush, Sweet Charlotte!
