Here's a few lullabies for your Saturday evening.
James Taylor always had a beautiful voice. I first thought of Sweet Baby James, but I came across this intimate duet with his then wife Carly Simon doing You Can Close Your Eyes:
When it comes to voices Kate Bush is definitely in her own world. She is also an amazing songwriter an producer (Kate if you need back up on your next tour, I'm available!). Although she has had huge success in the UK she is not as well known over here in the States and that's a gross error. Here is a video someone made to her beautiful ballad And Dream of Sheep:
Chet Baker always had that "little boy lost voice" and I always felt he was one of the great Jazz singers. Likr his trumpet playing his range is in the middle register--no extreme highs or lows, but he has such a pure voice that's a pleasure to listen to. Here he is with The Night we called it a Day:
Finally, Tom Waits might not be the first thing people think of when they are trying to drift of and catch a few winks (most people don't think of him at all!
), but the man has written some of the most tender and hearbreaking ballads ever. As a famous star once said of him "From the minute he starts the song, you are there. On some dingy dock somewhere or leaving all you love behind to ride the rails. How does he do that?!" What would close out your Saturday better than Tom's Heart of a Saturday Night?:

Hey, Ben, thanks for the Kovacs selection ("Kitchen Symphony").
That selection is from 1961, but Kovacs was doing that kind of visual work (inanimate objects moving in time to music in very creative ways) from his earliest time on TV 10 years before. He was one of the few TV pioneers who understood that television is indeed a visual medium, and not just radio with pictures. What is done these days with standard and computer animation was done then by Kovacs and his troupe with real objects and people. What I see posted on YouTube for Kovacs is only the merest tip of the creative iceberg. Two or three generations of TV innovators owe Kovacs much more than they realize.
