Possible - and I just did as well. Here's my reasoning: although Friday is a deliberately screwball as can be (remember Hawkes urging the actors to talk louder and faster?), it is more like chalk on a blackboard screwy. I can't watch more than a few minutes at a time of this movie -- it's just too hyper for my tastes, and I find it tiring and not particularly satisfying. The rivalry between Grant and Russell shows through the characters.

Baby, on the other hand, is equally screwy, but on a more human scale. I think the script is more literate and the acting more believable. For me, one important aspect of a screwball is that although situations are screwy, characters move through them with consummate believability and conviction, even if they themselves are screwy, and Baby meets that criteria for me. Hepburn's perfectly sincere dismay in "Oh, you've torn your coat!" cracks me up every time.

To each one's own, I guess. I find BuB to be like nails on a chalkboard every other time I watch, though once in a while I do like to see Walter Catlett and Cary and Kate and Charlie and Barry and Fritz. But the part where they are running around yelling, " George.." drives me crazy.

I like BRINGING UP BABY a lot.

But not when it's up against the wittiest, slyest and GREATEST Screwball Comedy of all time.

Bringing Up Baby is my favorite, the fact it has a cat is an added bonus.

since you've all ragged on me re: my feelings about His Ugh Girl Friday, I won't elaborate...but it still makes me itch.. I agree about the fingernails on a chalkboard, and Baby can be a bit over the top..but isn't that what screwball comedy is supposed to be?

Is their is a way I can split my vote into two equal parts ... I love them both dearly.
Half Vote for Bringing Up Baby and, another
Half Vote for His Girl Friday

This way my conscience is sane - not screwy.

I vote for Cary Grant!

I'm not allowed to watch My Girl Friday with hubby in the house, the shouting and interuptions and fast paced narrative drive him insane. He'd be able to sympathise with Nancy. I can't say he likes Bringing Up Baby either but at least he doesn't scowl quite as much. These films are the main reasons he dislikes Cary Grant and the fact I love him so much.
