Benefits Online

April 8, 2011

Actress Patty Duke and other cast members from her iconic '60s television show have reunited for a public service announcement -- a video urging seniors to apply for Social Security benefits online.

"I am thrilled that Patty Duke has once again volunteered to help us get the word out," Michael J. Astrue, commissioner of Social Security, said on Patty Duke's website. "The fact that this time her TV family has joined her makes this even more special and I thank William Schallert, Eddie Applegate and Paul O'Keefe for their service to America," Astrue said.

The site's landing page advises seniors to apply for Medicare by going to http://www.socialsecurity.gov and choosing Retirement/Medicare under the header, "Select Below To Apply For."

Social Security's online services can be accessed by going to http://www.socialsecurity.gov/onlineservices.

"The Patty Duke Show" aired on ABC from September 1963 to May 1966. On the show, Duke played "identical cousins" Patty Lane and Cathy Lane. Patty is a boy-crazy American teen from Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. Cathy is her worldly cousin from the U.K.

William Schallert, who played her father on the show, played numerous character roles in the 1960s. Among his other memorable roles were The Admiral on "Get Smart" and a benevolent teacher on "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis."

But back then . . .
