I must break from the maddening process of narrowing down my choices to comment on the brilliance of JackFavell's posts. I think Sally Brown could write the great American novel in the amount of time it's taking me to come up with my list.

I'll play, although this not so subtle attempt to dominate the board with Orson Welles is fooling no one.

Krzystof Kieslowski
Orson Welles (You didn't think I'd leave him out did you?)
Michael Powell
Carl Theodor Dreyer
Jean Renoir
Anthony Mann
Jacques Tourneur
Federico Fellini
Sam Peckinpah
Roberto Rossellini
Zhang Yimou
John Cassavetes
William A. Wellman
Mario Bava

Whatcha mean by that scurrilous remark casting doubt on my complete objectivity? Did I nominate any Welles movies as Favorite Screwball Comedy (Drat! Should've nominated THE TRIAL!) or Favorite Musical? Apology accepted.

I must admit to some surprise by one on your list (hint: between Cassavetes and Bava). Defying my expectations once again.

And I missed Fritz Lang, even when I listed my 32. How could I?

I knew that Mr. Siegel and Mr. Aldrich would finally make an appearance (and on whose list it would be).

Floyd Mutrix...somewhere Alan Freed, Dusty & Sweets are smilin'.

Yes, especially Dusty and Sweets McGee, which I watched last night (in 35mm) at the
Pacific Film Archive, utilizing the exact same print we used at the Roxie back in '96
when I revived it for a full week's run. It only gets better with each melancholy viewing.
Here's the only clip I could find on YouTube, one that features Billy Gray, the young actor
who played "Bud" on Father Knows Best in the 50s. He had come a long way, you might say.
