“Where can we go for a long weekend this Summer?” Think: City by
the Lake (no, not Milwaukee or Gary) – CHICAGO. There are
so many neighborhood, ethnic and city festivals (most with music) that
it’s almost paralyzing. Here are some tidbits on FREE festivals.

June 5-8: 25th Annual Chicago Blues Festival. Held in Grant Park, it is
the world’s largest free outdoor blues event. Performers this year include
Johnny Winter and James Cotton, Buckwheat Zydeco, B.B.
King
and the Queen of the Chicago Blues…

KOKO TAYLOR “Wang Dang Doodle”

June 27-July 6: 28th Annual Taste of Chicago. Held in Grant Park, eat,
drink and be merry (“eat” and “drink” are not free). Spectacular fireworks
on July 3. Loads of music, with this fellow’s free concert on June 28
being the major attraction.

STEVIE WONDER “Sir Duke”

August 28-31: 30th Annual Chicago Jazz Festival. Held in Grant Park.
Performers this year include Ornette Coleman (!), Gerald
Wilson
and, on August 28, the Saxophone Colossus himself…

SONNY ROLLINS “Alfie’s Theme”

Something newer? At Millennium Park on September 3…

ANDREW BIRD “Plasticities”

July 15 (and each of the next 6 Tuesdays): Chicago Outdoor Film
Festival. Crowd-pleasin’ classics under the stars at Grant Park. This
year’s selections include: ALL ABOUT EVE, THE DAY
THE EARTH STOOD STILL
, AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER
and a touch of genius and noir in the dark…

We've lost another great one, Bo Diddley. Where would BritRock (and all other forms of rock for that matter) have been without him?

Where Bo Diddley got it from. Not from the Dixie Cups (he predates them by a mile), but from songs like "Iko Iko," which is African in origin. This version of "Iko Iko" started out as a song about Mardi Gras crews in NO, but got a bit lost in translation.

Hey, DJ Judith, thanks for the dope on the passing of one of the
Record Party’s favorite cats. The world is now a somewhat sadder
place. Let’s let big bad BO DIDDLEY play us out one last time.
Play us out? We’ll play it LIVE %#@%&#$@, PLAY IT LIVE!!

Dewey, that was somewhere beyond supah-fine . . . . down-home suborbital, mebbe?
That Bo, he was The Man, before most of the rest of us knew what that even meant . .
Bob Dylan, ZZ Topp, George Thoroughgood, Robert Palmer, Carlos Santana, Van Morrison, Eric Burden, Robert Cray, Chris Isaak . . all of them, and how many more, would've just flashed the pan briefly & vaporized, if not for his early influence?
Man, just somebody tell me all those indescribable RubeGoldberg/Junkyard/Rockabilly/RatFink guitars of his fever-dream invention are going to be comemorated in some Hall of Fame somewhere!!!

The tributes should never stop for the Rock’n’Roll Man who knew
the guitar is a percussion instrument. Every rock’n’roller since 1955
owes ELLAS BATES McDANIEL a big piece of their pie. A vital
part of Chicago’s music scene since his first recording on Chess in
1955, he will be missed.

“Road Runner”

“Who Do You Love” (How scary is this? Hoo-doo ya love?)

“I’m a Man” (the flipside of “Bo Diddley” – thank you, Judith –
thereby making it arguably the greatest 45 ever)

“You Can’t Judge a Book by the Cover”

“Mona”

And who does BO DIDDLEY credit as influences?

I was a Muddy Waters fanatic. But I wasn’t a cat that was
trying to play like Muddy Waters
.

MUDDY WATERS “Hoochie Coochie Man”

In addition to Muddy, the artists I admired were John Lee
Hooker
, Jimmy Reed, Louis Jordan. I always wanted
to be like Jordan. I dug his style. But I just couldn’t blow no
saxophone.

JOHN LEE HOOKER “Boogie Chillen”

JIMMY REED “Ain’t No Big Deal”

LOUIS JORDAN & the Tympany Five “Caldonia” (I’m with Bo
– Rock’n’roll starts here!)
