What a treasure; and what a loss for all of us that she never found the time to appear in more films - for example, it was her "little" role in the original 13 Ghosts that easily makes it the jewel in Bill Castle's popcorn crown!

Ironic, considering the apocryphal tale of her blow to Errol's upper cheek on the set of The Private Lives of Elizabeth & Essex !
mongoII wrote: Lucille Ball embraces essential character actor William Frawley.
And really, who wouldn't want to give this vastly underrated master of supporting & character roles a big hug?
I rate him in the same company as James Gleason, Thomas Mitchell & Bill Demarest (that last being the very trouper who filled the departing Frawley's niche as the nurturing uncle of TV's "My Three Sons"!).

One thing I've always noticed about Wm. Frawley, in his photos, is that he was quite a natty dresser. Even as Fred Mertz, when not in his janitor gear, he generally looked more stylish than Ricky Ricardo, potbelly notwithstanding.

Oh Joe,

Ha, ha, ha....
You've got me laughing out loud - -
Just what kind of cup(s) and where are you going to paste them???
And, an old supply of ungentine may not be as safe as once was...

Just make sure you have all the offspring and descendants you want, as you may do yourself an injury and then, woe betide you, no more kiddies!!!

And, all of you better not tell Cinesage, Jr. on TCM that I misspelled 'ungentine' (ungantine) or he will have a coniption fit and have to take to his bed for 2 weeks!!!

Larry, I was just kidding although I'm glad that you got a kick out of it.
I will however save that old plastic spray bottle of Unguentine.

And I promise not to mention anything to Cinesage Jr. since I recall him very well.

Hi,

Wow, Deborah Kerr, Ann Miller and Claudette Colbert all looking very glamourous.....
And, notice that they are all in evening gowns with high neck and long sleeves. One does not need to be falling out of her clothes to be sexy!!

Even though I adored Ann Miller, she does have on too much makeup. But, she was an attention getter.
I escorted her around Las Vegas for 4 days in 1998, and she was "in the spotlight" everywhere we went!!

Thanks Mongo for all those great shots! :)

I think the 'jumping shot' with Grace Kelly is most certainly by photographer Philippe Halsman. He made a great series of shots like that with celebrities. He felt that while jumping people revealed more about their personalities than just when they were standing. 8)

I saw Ann Miller once in the flesh at the NFT in London in 1994. She looked like the perfect 'great movie star' like on that shot.

I think you're exactly right, because I recall that at some time in the late 80's/early 90's, they were all gathered into a coffeee-table type hardbound publication, which I checked-out of the Vashon Island library back in 1995. The title pivoted on either "jumping", or "the jump".
The only "portraits" I specifically remember were one by an arch, coldly ruffled-looking Van Cliburn, who was the only celebrity who flatly refused to jump (purportedly objecting because it was too "undignified") and a playful one by Richard Boone, in his full Paladin regalia, who spoofed-up his jump like Tweety Bird (rather unflattering for his well-foundationed physique).

Do you know if that watermelon eating shot was taken on the set of The Women? The dress Norma is wearing looks very much like the one she was 'trying on' after the fashion show in the movie, except she's missing that stupid hat :!: :!: :!:

Larry, those glamour shots certainly caught my eye while scanning the internet. Those ladies were pure Hollywood indeed.

Thanks, Ann Harding and Klondike for shedding light on those 'jumping shots' and photographer Philippe Halsman. It appears that Van Cliburn was no fun.
I vaguely recall such shot some years ago in one of the big magazines.

Anne, It was on the set of "The Women" and in fact both Crawford and Shearer are wearing their outfits used in the the film.

Barbara Stanwyck looks a million dollars. All those stars aged well, I agree about Ann Miller and the makeup but Barbara to me just clinches it, she's stunning.

Mongo, if only Helen Hayes had looked as pretty on camera in the movies as she did in that photo of her at home! Poor woman was constantly shying away from the camera and in some dreadful makeup for most of her younger roles in the '30s. I never had the feeling that she was comfortable acting on camera until I saw her as the Dowager Empress in Anastasia (1956). The intervening years seemed to have relaxed her. Or maybe she finally had a role that fit?

Hi John,

I am very envious of you knowing, even for an evening, Helen Hayes, Vincent Price, Eva Marie Saint and the Wallachs....

My father once told me that my knowing all those 'silly people' didn't amount to anything; they were of "no substance"....
However, you did meet people of substance and so now we all here must shine our spotlight(s) on you!!!

Congratulations....

I must say that I got a kick out of Helen Hayes as Ada Quonsett (love that name) in "Airport" for which she won an Oscar. I would like to see her in "My Son John" (1952) with Robert Walker which I believe is seldom aired.

Regarding the top hatters image, I should mention Chasen's (1936 - 1995)owned by Dave Chasen, was a famous restaurant in Beverly Hills, California that was a favorite hangout for everyone from entertainment luminaries to world leaders.
Many of its regular customers had booths named in their honor. The Ronald Reagan booth, now on display at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library museum, was where Reagan proposed to Nancy Reagan (neė Davis). Four decades later he took the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Margaret Thatcher there. Other well known people that had a booth were Frank Sinatra, Alfred Hitchcock, Jimmy Stewart and Groucho Marx, to name a few.
it was also the site of the preeminent Academy Awards party for many years and was also famous for its chili.
The shenanigans of its famous diners are also legendary:
Liz Taylor and Richard Burton got into an argument at Chasen's one night resulting in Liz throwing her plate of food at Burton and leaving the restaurant. The shouting match continued out onto Beverly Boulevard.
Peter Lorre and Humphrey Bogart got drunk at the bar one night and heisted the restaurant's huge safe. They rolled it out the front door, but abandoned it in the middle of the street. It took six people to haul it back in.
Those were the days.
